this school. He believed the essence of cinema was editing
to show how editing can effect the viewers he would use
shots of an actor and intercut them with shots of a
meaningful image such as a casket or a bowl of soup. This
helped him change the viewers interpretations of images
this method is now called the Kuleshov Effect.

GEORGES MELIES
Melies was a French filmmaker and illusionist he is famous for
leading technical and narrative developments in early days

came across the substitution stop trick in 1896 he then was
one of the first filmmakers to use time-lapse photography,
dissolves, hand painted colour and multiple exposures in his
work.

CLAPPERCOARD
The clapperboard was used during film making to match
certain scenes with the correct soundtrack and make them
fit perfectly this is as you can see the clapperboard in the
scene and can hear it so you can match the sound to the
movement this is why it makes the loud clap noise. This also
used to have a chalkboard on the side to write down what
scene it is.

NON-LINEAR EDITING
A non-linear editing is the complete opposite of linear editing
which is to display the images as they are recorded whereas
non-linear is when images recorded from loads of different
times and cut them in together to create a video this can
also be done with audio editing.

sound also magnetic sound film.

VHS

recorded images onto a VHS cassette which can then be
viewed at a later date using a VHS machine which could be
plugged into a television and played on the screen.

AVID
Avid technology was first shown at the National Association of
Broadcasters convention in april 1988 it was their first
design and it was based around a Apple Macintosh 2
computer with special software and hardware of their own
installed to the computer. The software they displayed was
later known as the biggest shake up in editing since Melies
played with time and consequences and by the early 1990s
this system began to replace some of the other software's
such as Moviola, Steenbeck, and KEM flatbed editors.

FINAL CUT PRO

Final cut pro is a series of non-linear editing programs this was
developed first by Macromedia Inc. later Apple Inc. began to
develop this program it is now run on most apple computers
and laptops as the latest version, Final Cut Pro X 10.2, runs
on Mac OS computers powered by OS X version 10.9 or later.
The software allows any users to transfer video onto a hard
drive where it can then be edited.

CONTINUITY EDITING
This is a style of editing film and videos this is used during the
post-production process of filmmaking narrative films and
television programs. The purpose of this style of editing is
to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editing
process and to establish a logical coherence between shots.

FOLEY SOUND
Foley is when everyday sounds are recreated and then added
to film, video and other media in post production this is
because it boosts the audio quality. The noises added are
such basic sounds heard everyday like squeaky doors so
