ELEMENTS WITHIN

HORROR GENRE

Definition: Horror is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from
viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears.
Horror films contain a number of elements in order to achieve the genre successfully. In
order for a film to be of the horror genre there needs to a specific focus on:
-setting
-characters
-mise-en-scene
-music
-costumes

HORROR GENRE

Horror films often use a specific range of locations, as they have become
iconic and recognizable to audiences, identifying with the horror genre as a
whole. Locations include:
- haunted house: adding a supernatural/ paranormal element, usually old and
abandoned, or haunted through curse, commonly featured at night to
contribute to the fear.
- Graveyard: works well for horror films as has connotations of death, ghosts
and loneliness , stereotypical conventions of horror films.
- Suburban house: commonly featured in modern horror films as make
audiences relate to victims.
-rural locations: abandoned, isolated places where victims are alone and
vulnerable for instance a forest, where the fear of the unknown is portrayed,
and adds to suspense being unable to escape.

SETTING

Horror films contain a number of stereotypical characters to follow through the codes
and conventions.
- Victim: usually a woman, portrayed as vulnerable and in need of protection. Used as
a tool to build suspense to audiences who sympahtise for them as they are
victimised.
- Hero: usually a male, very masculine. However does not always triamph over villain.
In most cases is just represented as brave and willin. Often causing the death of hero.
-Hysterical character: usually has experienced previous troubles e.g bestfriend been
killed by villian. Adds to the suspense of the film and audiences fear of what is going
to happen next.
- Villain: Can be in many forms from murderer, ghost, demon, monster, zombie etc...
contribute to the fear of the unknown with audiences not aware of their full motives.
The villain is the epitome of all codes and conventions with horrors, bringing emotions
of fear, suspense, drama and terror.

CHARACTERS

Sound is important to horror films as it contrbutes to the feeling of


suspense and fear, by building tension. There is sterotypical sounds
that are assosiated with horror films:
-eerie silences
-loud bangs

Extreme changes of pitch tones

Long notes

Echos
