Super Second Graders

Dear Parents,
Your children are absolutely amazing!
Each child is so special to me. I am so
enjoying my time at Saint Thomas. The
families here are so welcoming and so have
the teachers (like the wonderful Mrs. Lake!).
I have loved getting to know all of the
families. Some highlights from my time have
been teaching reading and writing and
getting lots of hugs! Being in a Catholic
school has also deepened my faith in the
Lord, and I believe this has made me a
better teacher. Im loving mass on Fridays!
The very best part of Saint Thomas is the joy
of serving children. Im so lucky to be here!
Call or email if you have any
questions, comments, concerns or good
stories to tell!

Homework
Thank you so much for your support
with the homework and following through
on the sheets to let me know they are
getting it done each night. As a parent
this would help me too to stay on track
and accountable. Monday they will get a
new sheet in their homework folder with
their new spelling words. Those with
leveled books coming home will have a
new one of those too. Please let me know
if you have any questions.

Thank you!
Jennifer Kienke

For where your

treasure is there your
heart will be also.

Be sure to dress warm for

the Aquinas walk! Its
cold outside! Brr!

Reading/Writing
Our stories have been The
Ugly Duckling, Duck, Eye
Spy, and Seeing. A couple of
these have been fiction and a couple
non-fiction. Weve been keeping up
with our word wall words and
spelling words. Our word wall words
have been: because, carry, dont,
goes, whole, keep, new, mother,
myself, and warm. This week they
did the best theyve done yet on
their spelling tests. Keep up with
that spelling practice! Next week our
stories will be Furry Mouse and
Two Mice and our word wall
words will be almost, another,
around, food, under.
In writing I gave the kids a
picture prompt where they had to
finish the picture and write about it.
It was so much fun! We also wrote
about Christopher Columbus and
read a few stories about him.

Religion
Were talking and reading about
what it means to care. We talk about
what it means to care for Gods
creation and how we can be helpful for
others. Our virtue these past two weeks
has been courtesy. We have discussed
ways we can be courteous to other
people and that courtesy is the ultimate
showing of respect. We also went to
Eucharistic adoration in the chapel
last week. This is a very special time for
them because they are preparing for
the Eucharist this year. This was a
peaceful, prayerful time for the children
and they did really well!

Science and Social Studies

Science has been so much fun!

We have tried an experiment with
plants where we withhold water or
sunlight and also we are trying to grow
lima beans in a baggie and wet paper
towel. These arent turning out so well,
(I blame Michigan weather) so we will
probably replant some sunflowers next
week. Were also talking about parts of
plants and what they do. We will have
a plant test Monday that we reviewed
for this week.
For social studies, were studying
what it means to have a local, state,
and national government. We talked
about who our government officials are
and what they do. We also celebrated
Columbus Day.

Math

In math we have been discussing

Jack and the Beanstalk and how big or
small the beans are. We are
learning all about measuring. We
started with unifix cubes (small
interlocking cubes) and are now
graduating to creating and using other
measuring tools. The kids are loving it!
