University of Massachusetts - Amherst: Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering CEE 331: Structural Analysis

University of Massachusetts - Amherst assigns homework #5 in its CEE 331: Structural Analysis course. Students must solve 4 problems: 1) analyze a roof and interior floor loads per Hibbeler 1-11, 2) calculate maximum bending moment in beam 2 and live load force in columns for a 2-way floor slab, 3) sketch tributary areas for floor systems with columns only and beams only, 4) complete Hibbeler problem 1-16.

CEE 331: Structural Analysis
Homework #5: Due October 14
Problem 1: Hibbeler 1-11. Make sure to include interior floor loads as well as roof
load.
Problem 2: Consider the two way flooring system shown below. The floor slab is 6
in. thick, and is made of standard stone reinforced concrete. The slab supports offices.
Neglect the selfweight of the beams in your calculation. Using the tables in Hibbeler,
the concept of tributary area, and elementary statics of beams:
(a) compute the maximum bending moment caused by dead and live load in beam 2.
Use live load reduction with KLL = 2
(b) compute the live load force in the columns. Use live load reduction with KLL = 4.

Problem 3: Consider the floor systems shown below. Make a sketch of the floor and
include dashed lines to indicate the tributary area associated with the indicated structural elements.
(A) columns only.
(B) beams only.

Problem 4: Hibbeler 1-16
