The Rules of the Game Writing Assignment

Final Draft Due Date: October 15, 2014

In her short story The Rules of the Game, the author Amy Tan uses sensory detail to place her
readers in the storys vivid settings and give life to Meimeis narration of her childhood memory
of playing chess in the alleyways of San Francisco. Think about a childhood memory that you
have associated with a physical place. In a 1-2 page autobiographical narrative: describe the
place with as much sensory detail as possible, summarize one memory you associate with that
particular place, and reflect on a lesson you learned from that experience.
What I expect:
MLA format (Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1 inch margins)
Flowing organization
Smooth transitions
All parts of the assignments addressed:
o description of the physical place
o summarization of a specific memory
o reflection on a lesson learned from the experience
Inclusion of literary devices (ex: similes and metaphors) to enhance description
Correct spelling and grammar
First draft due: October 8, 2014
In-class revision day: October 10, 2014
Final draft due: October 15, 2014
Late submissions will not be accepted.
