V90 Standard

The document discusses the V90 standard for 56K modems. It introduces the K56flex standard developed by Rockwell as an alternative to US Robotics' X2 technology, allowing speeds up to 56Kbps over asynchronous connections. While average speeds were around 50Kbps, rates of 110Kbps and 230Kbps were expected with data compression. By 1998, the V90 standard had been established, meaning most 56K modems used a flash BIOS and could communicate compatibly using the V90 standard.

56K modems
The Rockwell company has introduced a new standard: the K56flex standard. This
standard is offered as an alternative to the X2 technology of US ROBOTICS.
It enables speeds in the region of 56Kb/s to be reached over an asynchronous connection.
It is differentiated by coding and server.
The average speed is 50 Kbps but the company reckon on achieving rates in the region of
110 then 230 Kbps for data offering a high rate of compression. In the beginning the two
standards were judged to be able to develop.
Since 1998 the standards have been established. So, the majority of modems offer a
"flash" bios (i.e. a modem which can be developed). Using the V90 standard, 56K
modems should now be compatible between themselves.
