Syllabus: English Oral Proficiency

Instructor: Jennifer Hoyzman


Course Description:
This course is required for first year students who are preparing to be English teachers in the school
system. It is a 2 hour course semester A & B for 2 credits.
Course Objectives:
The course focuses on oral proficiency with the aim of improving the fluency and accuracy with
which students speak English for a variety of purposes: presentation to a group / class, explaining
a language point, presenting a topic, leading a discussion.
Topics:
Students will study and practice a variety of presentation modes:
1. presenting a news event
2. giving instructions
3. presenting a topic of personal interest
4. discussing a well-known personality
5. teaching and practicing language points
6. leading a discussion
7. reading to an audience
Students will also study 1. methods of evaluating oral presentations
2. steps to improving accuracy
Course Requirements: Class work, attendance, oral presentations, practice tasks (50%),
exam (50%) .
YOU MUST RECEIVE A GRADE OF 80 TO PASS THIS CLASS
Requirements:
1. Attendance is compulsory.
2. Active oral participation.
3. Class presentations which include a short presentation, group work and class discussion.
4. Practice and tasks posted at the Moodle site for this course
5. An exam at the end of each semester.
