1- To be truly helpful to our patients and their families, we must not only listen to their stories but do so
with openness and a genuine desire to understand their experiences. Listening in this way can be
challenging for professional caregivers and has even been referred to as the lost art. Poetry offers us one
way to listen to the stories of patients and families. This article explores the role of poetry in deepening
understanding of the experience of families and provides guidelines for those wishing to incorporate
poetry into teaching-learning activities.
All too often, when practice is not informed by understanding of the familys perspective, the void is
filled by assumptions and judgments about family involvement, relationships, and expectations. This can
lead to the use of harmful labels, such as dysfunctional and unrealistic, and to stafffamily
relationships characterized by superficial pleasantries, conflict, or avoidance, rather than meaningful,
supportive engagement. Failure to know and understand the person hinders our efforts to provide personcentered care and may contribute to unnecessary suffering associated with standardized care approaches.
