A précis is a concise summary that is approximately one-third the length of the original text. It covers all the key points and important information while leaving out unnecessary details. A good précis uses a minimum number of words to convey the maximum amount of information and stands on its own as a complete and coherent understanding of the original document. When writing a précis, one should identify the purpose and intended audience, carefully read and analyze the original text twice, underline the main ideas, write a title and paragraph summaries, and review and edit the précis to ensure it meets the qualities of completeness, compactness, conciseness, clarity and coherence.
