Week6ss Plasticpov

This lesson plan teaches third grade students about plastic pollution from two perspectives through a 30-35 minute lesson. Students will watch videos about how plastic affects wildlife and create an art project showing the different points of view of humans and animals on trash. They will discuss how long it takes plastic to decompose, where trash goes, and how reducing plastic use can help the environment. The formative assessment is an eye sheet where students draw two views on plastic pollution.

II. LESSON BODY
INTRODUCTION:
Last week we discussed and watched how plastic pollution affects ocean wildlife
What are some things you found interesting last week? (Video on the birds, how much
plastic is produced, how much trash is in the ocean, how many animals die because of it)
How long do you think it takes a plastic bottle to decompose? aluminum can? plastic bag?
bag=10-20 years
can=200 year
plastic bottle=450-500 years!

Where does our trash go?
How is plastic made & how to reuse plastic:

Discuss the presentation:
Did you know it takes oil to make plastic? How might this be a problem?
If we need more oil = more ocean drilling

How does plastic get to the ocean?

What is the pacific garbage patch? (mass of plastic waste)
If fish eat plastic, other animals are eating plastic too What does this mean?
How can we reduce the number of plastic bags we use?

I want you to watch this next video and think how does plastic affect us when we eat seafood
https://youtu.be/FjT8GG0ETQg
(Stop video at 2:05)
Why is plastic such a big problem in the ocean?
How does it come around and harm us when we eat seafood?
Create a list on the board on how humans view trash versus how animals view trash
Tell students theyll be drawing two points of view on this topic from either their
perspective or from an animals point of view
Pass out the eye sheet and give direction on where theyll be drawing and ideas to include
Include either title: How Humans View Trash or How Animals View Trash
Allow students enough time to complete their point of view sheet
CLOSURE:
Share their points of view with the class
Day 2:
Where Does Our Trash Go?
Weve all be taught that recycling is good for the planet. Weve seen recycling containers in
public places and we might recycle in our own homes.
But, have you ever stopped to think why we recycle? What does recycling really mean?
What are the real benefits?
Where does our trash go?
http://www.naturebridge.org/garbology.php
Do the chip bag into the landfill and the banana into the compost
Discuss where our trash ends up
What is a landfill?
What is compost? How does it affect the our planet?
Discuss the plastic production system vs. the consumer
How could we get them to produce less?
Pass out a sticky note to write their idea
Where does the plastic go?
https://youtu.be/ccubxZfwUFI
The sad thing is that many people dont recycle
Only
less than 35% of households and less than 10% of businesses in the U.S. recycle.
(EPA 2011)
Why not? (Too busy, dont know where, too much work, etc)
Did you know:

CA has a mandatory recycling law where you must recycle called CalRecycle started in
2012.
Bins to place items and receive money
Can also be filled if not recycling
Good or bad program?
Closure:
Paper vs plastic discussion
Chart on how to reduce plastic
What can be recycled?
metals aluminium (beverage cans), tin, steel (canned food)
paper- cardboard, cereal boxes, office paper, magazines, newspapers, junk mail
glass
plastics
electronics
batteries
food
Pass out sheet with recyclable item
Tell students to look for the recycle icon
How many times had your item been recycled?
Why is recycling important?
Pass out paper bags to each student from Earthfare.
Tell students that by using the paper bag, they are using one less plastic bag each time
III. LESSON ESSENTIALS
DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
Students will learn how plastic production harms the ocean wildlife and humans as well. The
information will be presented through a visual presentation and a video. This will help students
understand the content better through an interactive visual. Itll also benefit the ELL student who relies
on visuals to help him understand the content. Students will also have an opportunity to share and
discuss what theyve learned through an open class discussion as well as partner interactions. Students
will have a chance to express their creativity by designing a point of view either from an animal or
coming from themselves to better understand what its like viewing one material from two separate
eyes.
