2. 2. Developing Investigation and Communication Skills
Specific Expectations:
2.3 investigate, through experimentation, interactions that occur as a result of mixing and/or
dissolving liquids and solids (e.g., salt and water, sand and water), liquids and liquids
(e.g., oil and water), and solids and solids (e.g., salt and sand).

3
Running Head: SCIENCE LESSON PLAN
Beyond the use of reasoning and consensus, scientific inquiry involves the testing of proposed
explanations involving the use of conventional techniques and procedures and usually
requiring considerable ingenuity.
Performance Indicator:
S2.1a Indicate materials to be used and steps to follow to conduct the investigation and
describe how data will be recorded (journal, dates and times, etc.)
S2.3a Use appropriate "inquiry and process skills" to collect data
S2.3b Record observations accurately and concisely
NYS P-12 ELA Common Core Standards ELA & Literacy
Standard Strand: Writing Standards K- 5
Grade: 2
Topic Strand: Text Types and Purposes
Item Number and Statement: 3. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to
narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in
which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened.
B. Central Focus:
Students will be able to identify the properties of solids and liquids through scientific experiments
and written reflections. Students will observe, describe, and compare physical properties of
solids and liquids and they will combine solids and liquids to create mixtures and solutions.
C. Objectives:
1. Given a solid and a liquid, and the solution of the two together, students will make
comparisons about their observable properties
2. Given an experiment on the properties of liquids and solids, students will be able to predict,
conduct and evaluate mixtures of matter with a focus on liquid mixtures and solid mixtures.
3. Given an experiment on properties of liquids and solids, students will be able to complete the
handouts and record their experimental data collected in their science journals using proper
vocabulary related to this topic.
D. Assessment Plan:
1. The teacher will formatively assess students understanding of the properties of solids and liquids
while walking around the classroom and observing the students during the experiment
2. The teacher will formatively assess students understanding of the properties of solids and liquids
through class discussion after the experiment.
3. The teacher will collect the students completed handouts and science journals to summatively
assess students understanding of the properties of liquids and solids.
E. Opening/Anticipatory Set
1. Teacher Talk: This week we have been discussing the properties of solids and liquids. Lets
take a moment to review what we have already learned about solids and liquids. Who can tell me
what a solid is?
4
Running Head: SCIENCE LESSON PLAN
2. Student Talk: A solid has a definite shape, stays in one place, can be held and keep their
shape.
3. Teacher writes the students answers on the board.
4. Teacher Talk: Who can tell me what a liquid is?
5. Student talk: Liquids can be poured easily, they are not easy to hold and changes their shape
depending on the container they are in.
6. Teacher writes students answer on the board.
7. Teacher Talk: Today, we will be scientists, using the scientific method to conduct an
experiment using different materials that are liquids and solids. We will examine what happens
when mixing liquids with liquids, liquids with solids and liquids with liquids.
8. Teacher hands out the worksheets and science journals.
F. Main Body/Procedure:
1. Teacher Talk: Class, before we get to the experiment, let us talk about safety. What are some
safety rules that you need to follow when conducting an experiment?
2. Student Talk: Not to put anything in our mouths, cleaning up right away if you spill something,
wash our hands after we are done with the experiment.
3. Teacher writes the students responses on the whiteboard.
4. Teacher Talk: In todays experiment we will be mixing different solids and liquids together. You
will receive 2 worksheets to record your data and write the results/outcomes. (See the Scientific
Experiment Recording sheet, Mixing worksheet and Adding Different Liquids Together).
5. Teacher places the worksheets on the Elmo (document camera) so that students can follow along
as she explains what is needed to be done on the worksheets.
6. Teacher Talk: The Mixing worksheet will be the worksheet you will write your data in as you
are conducting your experiment. The Scientific Experiment Recording sheet will be your final good
copy. You will staple it in your science journals which will be for homework and handed in tomorrow
for evaluation. You can write in your science journals if you need more space to write.
7. Teacher Talk: Class do you have any questions?
8. Teacher answers any questions that the students have.
9. Teacher will divide the class into groups of 3 regardless of the religion, culture or gender taking
into consideration ELL learners and placing them with students who are proficient in science
experiment instruction.
10. Each member of the group will have the chance to experiment mixing liquids and solids together
and as a group can discuss what they observed.
11. Teacher will distribute the materials to every group.
12. Teacher Talk: Let us do an example together. Please take out your Adding Different Liquids
Together worksheet. Number 1 says water and oil. What do you think will happen when we mix oil
and water together?
13. Teacher writes students hypothesis/predictions on the worksheet and places it on the Elmo
(document camera) so that students can see how their worksheet should look.
14. Students copy the information onto their worksheet.
15. Teacher and students will pour the oil in the water and stir it with a stir stick.
16. Teacher Talk: What did you observe/notice when we poured the oil into the water?
17. Student Talk: We observed that oil and water do not mix together. The oil floats on top of the
water.

18. Teacher Talk: Lets look back at what we thought might happen (our hypothesis). Were we
correct?
19. Teacher Talk: Ok class lets begin the rest of the experiment. Please remember to be respectful
with your group. We are all to take turns. I will be walking around the classroom if you need help
with anything. Are there any questions in regards to what you are supposed to do?
20. Teacher responds to any questions.
21. Teacher will be walking around the room while the students are conducting their experiments,
asking questions and assisting students if they need extra support. The teacher will check ELL
students understanding of the instructions and the solids and liquids handout. Teacher will also
ensure students work respectfully and cooperatively with one another.
22. Students who finish early can work on their final good copy worksheet (scientific record sheet)
and staple it in their science journal, which will be homework and will be collected the next day.
23. The ELL students will work with the AIS teacher to complete their science journal.
G. Closure/Ending:
1. Teacher Talk: Today, we all had the opportunity to conduct experiments to determine what
happens when liquids and solids are mixed together. Lets go back to our desks and discuss with your
elbow partners at least two thing that you have learned from our experiment today
2. Give students a few minutes to discuss.
3. Teacher Talk: Would anyone like to share with the class what they have learned
4. Teacher Talk: For homework, I would like you to finish your handout and place it in your science
journal. Are there any questions?
5. Teacher answers students questions
III. Reflection
1. Culturally Responsive Teaching:
Students are expected to work cooperatively and respectively with their classmates during the
experiment regardless of their race, socio-economic status, language, gender, religion or sexual
orientation.
2. Accommodations:
This lesson incorporates a variety of instructional strategies that are connected to the various
learning styles therefor addressing the needs of all students. These include oral instructions,
hands on activities and class discussion. The teacher will walk around the classroom and help
those who need the extra support checking in frequently on those with IEPs and ELL learners.
For the students who are done early they can begin writing their final copy of The Scientific
Experiment worksheet that is for homework. By having the students work in groups, it helps
provide assistance to those students who may need extra help.
3. Prerequisite Skills:
In order to be successful in this lesson, the students must know the characteristics of liquids and
solids and be able to make predictions, record their observations, and evaluate their results. In
addition, students must know lab procedures/safety.
6
Running Head: SCIENCE LESSON PLAN
4. Anticipated Misconceptions:
Students may think that solids vanish or disappear when they dissolve in the water. Students might
not correctly fill out their journal/worksheet or might not complete it therefor leading to a poorer
grade because they werent able to show their understanding of the topic.
5. Academic Language:
The key words used in this lesson are matter, dissolve, solid, liquid and mixture, prediction and
observation.
