Michelangelo is one of the most famous artists from the Italian Renaissance era known for his work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. While he was primarily a sculptor, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the chapel ceiling, which he reluctantly accepted. In painting the 2000 square foot curved ceiling, Michelangelo explored new techniques in art but also faced significant challenges, as he was uncomfortable bending for long periods and in poor physical pain. Despite the difficulties, Michelangelo's renowned artwork on the Sistine Chapel ceiling is now one of the most iconic and famous paintings in the world, cementing his status as a genius.
