Reflective Preface Writing Process

Francisco Morales reflects on how taking an English remedial course improved his writing abilities. He discovered weaknesses in grammar and sentence structure but strengths in narrative writing and adding paragraphs to improve flow. Assignments like rewriting a story in a different dialogue helped him write in varied tones. As he progressed, completing shorter assignments and visiting the writing center gave him feedback to strengthen papers. While initially thinking the class unnecessary, Morales realized it helped him identify strengths, address weaknesses, and feel more confident in his improved writing.

Process of Writing Reflection

To Whom It May Concern,
Starting off as a first time freshman at a big university like CSUN, I have to admit its
quite challenging to adapt to. Coming fresh out of high school, graduating as a valedictorian
gave me the motive that I was going to dominate the courses I took up. However, little did I
know I had to enroll in my first English class which was a remedial level in college. After taking
the EPT exam in the summer I soon found out that I didnt do so stellar and had to improve upon
my writing skills in my first semester. Therefore, I was placed in English 113A to help me
progress little by little. Though I felt like this course wasnt necessary for me in the beginning, I
soon came to find out that it was really helpful in finding my strengths and weaknesses during
the writing process.
Transitioning from high school writing to college writing, I assumed as if it was going to
be the same basic five paragraph essays. In high school I would somewhat struggle writing these
five paragraph essays not because of the lack of ideas, but because of the fact that we had to
always narrow it down to that intro, three body paragraphs, then a conclusion. That all changed
when I began college English. As my first writing assignment hit me right in the face I found out
that I can add those floating paragraphs to extend my essay a little more. Of course they had to
tie in with my topic I was talking about. Therefore, what I did with my narrative essay was add

that one extra paragraph in my essay. What this did was improve the flow of my essay and make
it easier for the readers to follow the path I was going down. I soon came to find out that my
weakness in this progression was grammar, meaning I lacked on sentence structure and often
made the mistake of creating several run on sentences throughout the paper itself. On the other
hand my strength was talking about myself, I really enjoy doing that. The narrative itself didnt
come so difficult to me but putting it together was hard to complete because I was not yet fully
prepared on my grammar.
As I progressed through the semester, completing several assignments before completing
an essay for a progression benefitted my writing abilities a whole lot. For an assignment we had
to complete an activity where we had to use a different dialogue based on the story line. Our
assignment was called One piece revised and what my group members and I did was transition
a pirate story line into a surfers dialogue while keeping the same concept of the story. This
assignment helped me realize that it was possible for me to write in different tones instead of
being monotone throughout my whole essay. I figured out that by sounding the same all time
gets boring to the reader and eventually causes them to zone away from your story.
By discovering all of this about my writing process as a whole made it so much easier
when I reached my third progression. Writing about social media apps came so much easier to
me than it already sounded with all the skills I have already developed throughout the course.
This paper was more like a research paper where we had to include at least two sources to back
up our opinions on the topics we decided to choose. Since I already had many ideas to write
upon, my skills of creating sentences was all I needed to create a strong paper. Visiting the LRC
twice this semester made a huge impact on my writing and gave me the confidence to keep going

considering the feedback I received from them. Them telling me I was a strong writer pushed me
to do even better and helped me discover that was an addition to my strengths.
Even though I had the assumption that this class wasnt really necessary for me, I am glad
I was placed in it. Spending a semester in the course really helped me realize what I was doing
wrong and right during my writing process. Discovering my strengths and weaknesses helped me
really improve as a writer. I learned that writing isnt for everyone, but there is always room for
everyone to improve in it no matter their assumptions. In my opinion, I feel as if my writing
improved a whole lot more than the level it was at in the beginning of the semester because I was
often monotone and repetitive. Now I feel as if my essays flow, and change into different
dialogues depending on the situations. Therefore, revising is not a waste of an individuals time,
it is beneficial for an individual to improve on what can be important in life which is knowing
how to write.
Sincerely,
Francisco Morales
