Assignment-Fluid Mechanics

This document outlines the requirements for an assignment on fluid mechanics. It provides three questions for students to answer in groups of two. They must submit their responses by December 18th, 2015 before 5pm and will lose 1 mark for each day their submission is delayed. Question 1 involves calculating the head required by a pump in a piping system moving fuel oil. Question 2 requires determining the shaft power developed by a hydraulic turbine runner. Question 3 involves analyzing performance data from tests on a 37.1cm centrifugal water pump and sketching its curve, finding its best efficiency point, and calculating its specific speed to prove it is a centrifugal pump.

Assignment EBT 317/Fluid Mechanics/NAH

2015

Requirement:
2 students/group
Answer TWO (2) questions.
Submission date: 18th of December 2015, before or at 5 pm. -1 Marks/1 day delay.

Question 1
Fuel oil is pumped through the piping system as shown in Figure 1 with velocity of 1.4 m/s. The pressure
60 m upstream from the pump is 35 kPa. Pipe losses downstream from the pump are negligible, but minor
losses are not (minor loss coefficients are given).
Info: sp. wt of fuel oil and viscosity = 7.5kN/m3 and 9.6 x 10-4 N.s/m2, respectively)
(a) For a pipe diameter of 5 cm with a relative roughness

= 0.001, determine the head that must be

added by the pump.

(b) For a pump operating speed of 1750 rpm, what type of pump (radial flow, mixed flow or axial
flow) would you recommend for this application?

Question 2
A simplified sketch of a hydraulic turbine runner is shown in Figure 2. Relative to the rotating runner,
water enters at section (1) (cylindrical cross-sectional area A1 at r1 = 1.5 m) at an angle of 100 from the
tangential direction and leaves at section (2) (cylindrical cross-sectional area A2 at r2 = 0.85m) at an angle
of 50 from the tangential direction.
The blade height at sections (1) and (2) is 0.45 m and the volume flowrate through the turbine is 30 m3/s.
The runner speed is 130 rpm in the direction shown. Determine the shaft power developed.
