Mini Lesson 1 Word
Mini Lesson 1 Word
ASSESSMENT:
Students will choose their favorite magical event from the novel. Students
will write a paper, make a video, powerpoint presentation, or
a storyboard poster explaining how the authors included specific details and a
matter of fact tone in order to blur the line between fantasy and reality in one
of the stories we read. Students will use textual evidence in their explanation.
PROCEDURES:
(For this lesson, students are divided into groups of three or four)
1. Review previous lessons in the magical realism unit. Have students review
the definition of magical realism: : fiction that integrates elements of
fantasy into otherwise realistic settings.
2. List as many items that are associated with fantasy. After checking that
everyone knows what the word fantasy means, have students come up
with connotation and denotations on the word fantasy.
3. Write down the words on a posterto later hang on in the classroom.
4. Have students group connotations and denotations that are alike in some
way from the list they came up with.
5. Have students label the connotation and denotation groups by defining the
reasons for grouping, and have them share their category names with the
class. Students will provide an explanation on their groupings and category
labels.
6. Have students regroup or subsume individual items or whole groups under
other groups. Students will look at the listed connotations and denotations
and see if they can find any items listed that they can put somewhere else.
This step should allow students to make further connections between
items. Students will also be able to make new groups from this activity.
7. Have students synthesize the information by summarizing the data and
forming generalizations. Students summarize what they have learned about
the word fantasy and its relationship in the meaning of magical realism by
writing a paragraph on the relationships between both definitions.
