Annie Leibovitz

Annie- Lou Leibovitz was born on October 12, 1949. She lived in Waterbury,
Connecticut. She was born as one of six siblings. Her father was a lieutenant in the Air
Force named Sam and her mother Marilyn Leibovitz, who was a modern dance
instructor. During her high school years, she was involved in various artistic classes like
painting and playing music. When her father was stationed in the Philippines during the
Vietnam War, she took up photography. In 1967, Annie enrolled in San Francisco Art
Institute where she majored in painting. Later on fell in love with photography and
started taking classes in it. She was influenced by photographers like Robert Frank and
Henri Cartier-Bresson.
1970 she applied for Rolling Stones and the editor Jann Wenner was so
impressed with her portfolio he offered her a job as a photographer. In 1973, she was
promoted to the chief photographer at Rolling Stones. She worked with Rolling Stones
the band during 1971 through 1972. They later wanted her to be their concert-tour
photographer in their international tour of 1975.
She was the first lady to photograph British singer Joan Armatrading in 1978.
Eventually, in 1983, she worked for Vanity Fair and worked on several high-profile
advertisements campaigns. The most noticeable advertisement was the American
Express Membership campaign. The campaign had many celebrity cardholders in
portrait which won Leibovitz the Clio award. In 1991, she photographed Demi Moore
pregnant that set off a trend of other celebrities posing while pregnant and caused other

controversies. Other than working on Vanity Fair in 1991 she was the first women
portraitist to get an exhibition of over 200 photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in
Washington, D.C.
Throughout the decade, she photographed countless of celebrities and athletes.
She even wrote a couple of books or her photographs were in books. Her techniques
consist of the use of bold primary colors and surprising poses. Her strong photos
became her signature work. Her first main goal is to make money from her work and her
second goal is to show that women can do anything if they set their mind to it. She
wants her audience to feel part of her work and the awe struck it gives them.
I believe Annie Leibovitz is one strong woman in the world of photographers. I
like that she sets out to make a name for herself no matter if it is through her books or
photographs. She seems like a lovely lady to work with and a serious role model to look
up to. Her photos give me an impression of beauty, elegance, and are extremely
controversial.
