STPM Physics Assignment

This chapter outlines the methodology used to study beat effects produced by combining sound waves of slightly different frequencies. The apparatus used includes signal generators, loud speakers, an oscilloscope, microphone, and smart phones. The procedure involves using the signal generators and speakers to produce sounds at different frequency pairs, observing the resulting wave patterns on the oscilloscope both individually and combined, and recording observations.

Chapter 2: Methodology

2.1

Apparatus
Smart phones
Microphone
Oscilloscope
Signal generator
Loud speaker

2.2

Procedure

1. A pair of signal generator connected to loud speaker is prepared as the sound sources with
frequency of 220Hz and 221Hz respectively to produce beat effect.
2. An oscilloscope is used observe the amplitude and wave pattern of the resultant sound wave
produced by superposition of sound waves with slight different frequency.
3. A microphone is placed towards the source individually to observe initial amplitude and wave
pattern of the sound sources
4. Two sources are set-up with different orientation of opposite towards each other, parallel to
each other and at an angle next to each other until beat effect is audible and resultant wave of
beat effect is observable on the oscilloscope.
5. All observation is recorded and tabulated in results and discussion.
6. The experiment is then repeated from step 1 to step 5 with different pair of frequency which is
(660Hz, 661Hz) and (999Hz and 1000Hz).
7. The experiment is then repeated with two smart phones with signal generator application as
sound sources.
