Macbeth Responses #10
1. What strengths and weaknesses of Lady Macbeth are revealed in these scenes? Discuss
her role in the murder and its cover-up, her jittery response to the sound of her husband's
voice, why she did not murder Duncan herself, and how she deals with her husband's
fears.
In the scenes one and two of act two, Lady Macbeth revealed different strengths and
weaknesses. She was involved in the murder because she is the one that came up with the
plan to stage it and make it look like the chamberlains committed the murder. This shows
that one of her strengths in coming up with insightful plans and plots. As the scene
progresses, she got nervous when she heard Macbeths voice. She imagined that the
chamberlains woke up and Macbeth was caught. From this, we can see that Lady Macbeth
has a weakness because she worries. She does not have confidence that others can complete
a job. When Macbeth came back, it was discovered that he had forgotten to leave the knife
in the room. Quick to anger, Lady Macbeth got mad at Macbeth and decided to put the
dagger back into the room herself. This shows that she has a weakness with self-control. She
has a hot temper and does not always know how to control it. However, it also reveals that
she is brave. She takes matters into her own hands and does not let fear stop her. These are
the strengths and weaknesses of Lady Macbeth.

2. What is the most memorable mental picture you formed while reading this act? Jot down
a few vivid words and phrases to describe that picture.
I formed a vivid mental picture when I read about Macduff walking into the Kings room
and finding him stabbed to death. I imagined his body covered in blood. The sheets and
blankets would be a nasty brown and red color. I envisioned a dagger drenched in blood just
sitting on the bed. The king would be lying dead in his bed with a shocked and in pain facial
expression frozen on his body. People would have horrified looks on their faces as they
entered the room to see the gory scene.
3. How has Macbeth changed as a result of the events in this act? Find lines that illustrate
these changes. What happens before and after he kills Duncan? Discuss his state of mind
and fears for the future. Do you feel sympathy for Macbeth?
The event of killing the King has forever changed Macbeth. Before this, he was an
upstanding, trustworthy man. However, after the events he is lying to everyone. He is saying
one thing while the exact opposite is true. One can sense this when they read that Macbeth
said, Had I but died an hour before this chance, I had lived a blessed time (Macbeth: Entire
Play). Along with becoming an untrustworthy person, Macbeth also killed others. By
killing one person, it changed him. It effected his moral thoughts and he simple killed
guards. Killing the King made him a selfish man who did not have a moral compass. This
change can be illustrated when Macbeth said, Who can be wise, amazed, temperate, and
furious, Loyal and neutral, in a moment (Macbeth: Entire Play)? Instead, he was set on
getting his way and doing whatever it took to achieve his goals. Because of the actions
Macbeth chose to complete, he now lives with the fear that everyone will find out his secret.

I do not feel sympathy for Macbeth because he was a grown man who made his own
decisions. He forgot about right and wrong just so he could become king.
4. Why are Macbeth and Lady Macbeth unhappy as king and queen?
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are unhappy as king and queen because they have too many
secrets and are afraid that other people will get in there way of keeping the thrown. They are
unable to enjoy being king and queen, because they can only think about what people are
threatening there power. Along with this, Macbeth is feeling guilt for killing people.
However, he cant stop. He want the power so bad that he is planning to kill his friend
Banquo. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are unable to enjoy being king and queen because they
obtained the power by completing murders. They now live with great secrets on their
shoulders and evil thoughts.
5. So far, Macbeth has seen a bloody ghost and a floating dagger and has heard voices.
What does his active imagination reveal about his inner conflicts?
His active imagination revels that he is feeling guilt for the deeds he had chosen to
complete. It also revels fear. It shows that Macbeth is scared that everyone will find out
about who he killed. He is nervous that his thrown will be taken away from him. Lastly, it
shows that he is losing all scenes of sanity. He has changed so much, that he is not even the
same person he used to be. Macbeth seeing a bloody ghost and floating dagger, show that he
is becoming insane.
