The document is a portfolio for the renovation of an abandoned house using Google SketchUp. It includes a table of contents, an explanation of the project, research on LEED green building standards, a list of materials used in construction, a work log of tasks completed by group members, and cited resources. The group worked collaboratively to renovate the house digitally and create a portfolio documenting the renovation and making it environmentally friendly according to LEED criteria. LJ took the lead on the digital renovation in SketchUp while other members focused on distinct sections of the written portfolio.

Interpretation & Explanation

The challenge is remodeling an old and abandoned house using
Google SketchUp. Using this technology, we were able to renovate the
house and increase its appearance and aspects. By doing that, we were
adding more appealing features to the house. SketchUp helps people have

page 3

the knowledge to figure out the basics of making a 3-D drawing on the
program. Practicing this challenge will boost one's skills for college or future
purposes. Also, while practicing the basics, it creates a lot of different ideas
to make things such as shapes or perhaps more complicated 3-D models.
Furthermore, it can also preserve and record the buildings that were
destroyed or are no longer in place, like ancient or modern buildings. For
example, buildings like the Twin Towers, the Leaning Tower, etc.
Of course we were having a great time learning how to use
SketchUp. It was interesting to learn new skills of another career field that
could one day be helpful to us. To make such huge improvements, our
team needed to think of different ideas to incorporate into the house. We
were very glad that one of our members, LJ, knew the basics of the
program. This made the challenge kind of easy for him. LJ decided to start
by looking at the blueprint that was given to us by Mr. Hirsch. He used that
to help him complete the final 3-D renovation of the house. It looked
amazing and we could not believe that SketchUp allowed us to do that.
Designing buildings using SketchUp was a great learning experience.
From this project we learned the basics of how an architect uses computer
aided design software to improve and create 3-D buildings. We learned
what made a building LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) certified and incorporated that into the renovation of the building.

Research LEED Assessment For

Green Building
Our Research to make our home into a green building consisted of
the U.S Green Building Council (USGBC) standards. Things that we will
could add to our design to make it a green building consists of:
Building the home in Colorado to avoid huge natural disasters
and receive a lot of sunlight.

page 4

Building the home in a location where the owner can easily

walk or access public transportation to a certain area.
Most of the equipment used for the house has an Energy Star
label on it which means that they have been approved by the
Environmental Protection Agency.
Our home would have solar panels to gain energy and
electricity from the sun. The energy not being used will of course be
stored for future use.
The building will be equipped with with low-flow shower heads
and faucets in the kitchen and bathroom. It will have energy star
washing machines and dryers in the laundry room.
The paint used for the house is non-toxic and a non-volatile
organic compound or non-VOC. The carpeting is also formaldehydefree which makes it environmentally friendly.
The lights in the building are all CFL light bulbs which means
that they last 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs and saves
$30 dollars worth of energy cost during its lifetime.
Adding all these environmentally friendly ideas to our renovated
house makes it a green building. The environmental benefits of this home
are reducing wastage of water and conserving natural resources. The
economic benefits are reducing operating costs and improve occupant
productivity. Lastly, the social benefits are that it improves quality of life and
improves occupant health and comfort.

Materials Used For The House

LJ started by building the framework of the house. After that, he
started to build up the walls from the framework. He then decided to go to
the front of the house. There he started to build the porch. Once that was
built, he used dark wood floor to paint the porch. From there he moved on
to the interior of the bottom floor. For the inside flooring, he used the same
type of wood as he did for the porch. The next step he took was inserting
the windows. For that he used translucent blue glass. He then built the
stairs that lead to the second floor. To do that he used brown loop pattern

carpet. After creating the stairs, he used the same dark wood to create a
railing for the stairs. Then, he started to plan the upstairs floor.
The first thing he did for the upstairs was make the floor and from
there he made the walls and built them up. Then he worked on making the
interior of the house which included the bedrooms, closets, and beds. After
that, he used the brown loop pattern carpet for the flooring. He then added
the windows again and used translucent blue glass. The next thing he did
was start to assemble the roof, including the attic. He added paint to the
roof to make it more realistic; for that he used the shingles materials. Next,
he began to paint the interior of the house. In order to do that he used the
beige color for the walls. Then he decided to paint the exterior. Alberto
really liked the cladding white siding, which is the material we used for it.
That was everything we used to construct the renovated house.

Plan of Work Log

Our group all worked well together to accomplish the necessary
components for this project. In order to complete this assignment, everyone
had to cooperate and do their part. Leandro was focused on assembling
the house while the rest of our group worked together to create the
portfolio.
On the portfolio we separated it into five different sections; each
section had its own page. Everyone in our group, except LJ, focused on a
certain section of the portfolio.
Yves decided to take over the interpretation and explanation page.
He started by explaining the assignment and what needed to be done. He
also included details about what program we needed to use.
Alberto researched information about what it takes for a house to be
green. In other words, he took the information he found and wrote about

page 6

the necessary components that our house would need to be

environmentally friendly. LJ took that information that Alberto wrote about
and made sure to incorporate it into the renovation of the house.
I, Brenda, documented all of the materials that were used to
assemble the house. I made sure to watch what changes LJ added to the
house so that I could write about them in detail.
I also completed this page. I kept track of making sure everyone did
what they were supposed to and stayed on task. Everyone collaborated in
order to complete our assignment. In the end we ended up with an
organized portfolio that contains all the content that it needed.
Isaai edited the portfolio and checked for any grammatical mistakes.
He also made sure that our portfolio was neat and free of any errors.
Even though Alberto, Yves, Issai, and I were in charge of creating the
portfolio, we did learn how to work with Google SketchUp. We thought it
was really interesting and cool. It was kind of like engineering, which we
were familiar with. Overall, every aspect of this assignment was a great
success.
