Labsheet 2

1. This lab report examines linear motion using a trolley rolling down an inclined runway. The objectives are to analyze displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Procedures involve setting up the apparatus and releasing the trolley to record its motion using a ticker timer. Data is analyzed by marking dots on the ticker tape and plotting position versus time graphs. Calculations of average velocity are performed and potential sources of error are discussed. The conclusion summarizes the key results on linear motion.

LINEAR MOTION
OBJECTIVES
1. To analyze linear motion of a moving object.
2. To determine displacement, velocity and acceleration of a linear motion.
INFERENCE
1. Linear motion is a motion along a straight line.
2. Velocity is uniform when acceleration is zero and non-uniform when acceleration is
non zero.
HYPOTHESIS
1. Velocity is speed in a given direction.
2. Acceleration is the increase of velocity over a period of time.
3. Deceleration is the decrease of velocity over a period of time.

PROCEDURES
1. Set up apparatus as in Figure 1.
2. The runway is inclined about 1m 2m, so that the trolley will roll down freely from rest
without any applied force.
3. Attach the ticker tape to the trolley using cellophane tape.
4. Switch on the ticker timer and release the trolley freely.

1. Mark and number every 10th dot as Figure 2.
2. Cut and paste ticker tape into 10-dot strips on the graph paper as Figure 3.
13.
14. Note:

1. Frequency of ticker-timer is 50Hz. Therefore, 1 dot or 1 unit time represents 1/50

seconds or 0.02 second.
2. Time for 10 dots = 10 dots x 0.02 seconds = 0.2 seconds
