Name: Class: .: Problem Solving (Qualitative) Skill No. 1: No. 3

This document contains 4 problem solving questions related to circuits and radioisotopes. Question 1 asks about modifying a 12V AC electric motor to operate on DC by changing the motor and external circuit. Question 2 asks about modifying a 240V AC transformer to output a steady 6V DC for mobile phone charging. Question 3 asks about designing a fire alarm circuit to sound when either of two heat sensors activate. Question 4 asks about choosing a radioactive substance and detector to study fertilizer absorption by plants based on the substance's state, half-life, emitted radiation type, and suitable detector type.

PROBLEM SOLVING (QUALITATIVE)
SKILL
No. 1:
Diagram 7 shows an electric motor which
is supplied with a 12 V a.c.

Using a 12 V a.c power supply, explain the

modification that needs to be done on the
motor and the external circuit to enable
the motor to be a d.c electric motor and
rotate faster.

Modification
Explanation

No.2:
A transformer is connected to a 240 V of
a.c power supply. Modification has to be
made to transformer so that the
transformer can be used as an efficient 6
V mobile phone charger.

Suggest the modification to be made to

the transformer, based on the aspect
below:
(i) can produce 6 V of output voltage
(ii) can produce steady direct current
(iii) has high efficiency

No. 3:
Diagram shows a control circuit for a
simple fire alarm system.

You are required to give a suggestion to

design the circuit so that it can switch on
the transistor and sound an alarm when
either one of the sensors gets hot. State
and explain the suggestions based on the
following aspects:
(i)
The type of gate X
(ii)
Component used to detect heat
and it position
(iii)
The position of the alarm
(iv)
The use of the extra
components in the circuit and
its positions to switch on the
240V, 12W alarm.

No. 4:
Radioaisotope is used as a tracer to
determine the rate of absorption of
fertilisers by plants.

In using a radioactive substance to study

the intake of fertilizer, suggest how the
substance and the detector should be
chosen by considering the following
aspects:
- The state of matter
- The half-life of radioisotope
