CP s6 - The Divisibility Rules

The document outlines divisibility rules for numbers 2 through 12. It provides examples for each rule on whether a given number is divisible. The rules include a number being divisible by: - 2 if the last digit is even - 3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3 - 4 if the last two digits are divisible by 4 - 5 if the last digit is 0 or 5 - 6 if the number is divisible by both 2 and 3 - 7 if doubling the last digit and subtracting from the rest is 0 or divisible by 7 - 8 if the last three digits are divisible by 8 - 9 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9 - 10 if the number ends

The Divisibility Rules (rules for shaded numbers must be learnt, others are optional)

Divisible by:

If:

The last digit is even (0,2,4,6,8)

The sum of the digits is divisible by 3

4
5

9
10 (multiple of
power of 10)

Examples:
128 is
129 is not
381 (3+8+1=12, and 123 = 4) Yes

217 (2+1+7=10, and 103 = 3(1)

)No
1312 is (124=3)
The last 2 digits are divisible by 4
7019 is not
175 is
The last digit is 0 or 5
809 is not
114 (it is even, and 1+1+4=6 and
63 = 2) Yes
The number is divisible by both 2 and 3
308 (it is even, but 3+0+8=11 and
113 = 3(2) ) No
If you double the last digit and subtract it from the rest of 672 (Double 2 is 4, 67-4=63, and
the number and the answer is:
637=9) Yes
0, or
905 (Double 5 is 10, 90-10=80, and
divisible by 7
(Note: you can apply this rule to that answer again if you 807=11(3) ) No

109816 (8168=102) Yes
The last three digits are divisible by 8
216302 (3028=37 3/4) No
1629 (1+6+2+9=18, and again,
The sum of the digits is divisible by 9
1+8=9) Yes
(Note: you can apply this rule to that answer again if you
want)
2013 (2+0+1+3=6) No
The number ends in 0 (has as many zeros as multiple of 220 is
power of 10)
221 is not
If you sum every second digit and then subtract all other
1364 ((3+4) - (1+6) = 0) Yes
digits and the answer is:

0, or
divisible by 11

3729 ((7+9) - (3+2) = 11) Yes

25176 ((5+7) - (2+1+6) = 3) No

(By 3? 6+4+8=18 and 183=6 Yes.
By 4? 484=12 Yes) Yes
