Reading Groups
Every morning to start our day we split up into our reading groups. This week my reading group was
reading Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends. This story had us talking about rescue dogs and how we
can train dogs to help us in our daily lives. The kids learned about how Jim trained the dogs and
they ended up saving his life and pulling him out of the cold water. Talking about rescue dogs led us
into talking about how we can help each other.
Social Studies
During the first full week of October we talked about the seven continents and five oceans. The
students have been finding the oceans and the continents on different types of maps. We used a flat
map, a globe, and a felt map that they are able to Velcro labels of the continents and oceans. The
students then were given a quiz in which they needed to label the continents and oceans. We then
started talking about the seasons of an apple tree and also the cycle of an apple tree. We talked about
how an apple tree starts as a seed and that it then grows into a seedling. They learned that the seedling
needs to grow for three to five years before the tree begins producing fruit. Once they understood that
cycle of an apple tree we started talking about how apple trees look in different seasons. They know that
in the spring the apple tree has blossoms that then turn into the baby apples.
Science
Last week we talked about five different habitats and the plants and animals that are in each habitat.
We also talked about what the weather would be like and some characteristics of each of these habitats.
This week we continued talking about the habitats and each student made a mobile about the habitats.
They wrote information on one side and drew a picture of the habitat on the other side.
