PENG 3310: Well Completion Instructor: DR Mohamed El-Ahmady Fall 2015 Due: 1 October 2015 Assignment 1

This document contains an assignment for a well completion course. It lists 4 questions regarding calculating the dissolving power of acid solutions used to acidize different rock formations. The questions involve reacting acid solutions with dolomite, calcite, and sandstone formations containing dolomite or calcite. They ask to determine the minimum preflush volume of acid needed to dissolve carbonates within a certain distance of the wellbore.

PENG 3310: Well Completion

Mohamed El-Ahmady
Fall 2015
October 2015

Instructor: Dr
Due: 1

Assignment 1
Answer ALL of the following questions
1- For the reaction between 17 wt% HCl (MW=36.5 gm) solution
and dolomite (MW=184.4gm, Density=177.2 Ib/ft3), calculate the
gravimetric and volumetric dissolving power of the acid solution
that will be used to acidize El-Gahawy formation
2- For the reaction between 18 wt% HCl (MW=36.5 gm) solution
and calcite (MW=100.1gm, Density=169 Ib/ft3), calculate the
gravimetric and volumetric dissolving power of the acid solution
that will be used to acidize the Salhin formation.
3- The Abd El-Geliel sandstone formation, with a porosity of 0.17
containing 11 v% dolomite (MW=184.4gm, Density=177.2 Ib/ft3)
is to be acidized with HF/HCl mixture solution. A preflush of 16 wt
% HCl (MW=36.5 gm) solution is to be injected ahead of the
mixture to dissolve the carbonate minerals and establish a lowpH environment. If the HCl preflush is to remove all carbonates in
a region within 1.4 feet beyond a 0.328-ft-radius wellbore before
the HF/HCl stage enters the formation, what minimum preflush
volume is required in terms of gallon per foot of pay zone?
4- The Gamgoum sandstone formation, with a porosity of 0.14
containing 12 v% calcite (MW=100.1gm, Density=169 Ib/ft3) is to
be acidized with HF/HCl mixture solution. A preflush of 17 wt%
HCl (MW=36.5 gm) solution is to be injected ahead of the
mixture to dissolve the carbonate minerals and establish a lowpH environment. If the HCl preflush is to remove all carbonates in
a region within 1.6 ft beyond a 0.328 ft-radius wellbore before
the HF/HCl stage enters the formation, what minimum preflush
volume is required in terms of gallon per foot of pay zone?
