Mathematics (T) VIva

This document contains a mathematics assignment involving parametric equations. There are three questions: 1) Plot the parametric curve defined by x=et and y=t^2-1 for -2≤t≤2. 2) Find three sets of parametric equations for the curve (y-1)^2=x-49 and discuss if other choices are possible. 3) Sketch the paths of two particles given their parametric equations, find the number of intersection points, and determine if they collide at any point. The solution provides the plots, parametric equations that satisfy the constraints, sketches of the particle paths, and determines that the particles nearly collide but do not actually

(Parametric Equation)

Introduction

Problem Statement
1. The parametric equation of a plane curve are defined by
Tabulate the value t , x and y and plot the curve
2. (a) Find three set of parametric equation whose equation is (y-1)2=x-49
(b) Is it possible to choose x=-t2 as the parametric equation for x ?
(c) Can you start with any choice for the parametric equation for y?
3. Suppose that the position of a particles at time t is given by
X1 = 2 sin t , y1 = 3 cos t

0 t 2

And the position of a particle is given by

X2 = cos t 2 , y2 = 1 + sin t

0 t 2

a) Sketch the paths of the particles on the same coordinates axes

b) How many points of intersection are there ?
c) Determine whether there is any point where the particles collides

Graph X = et , y = t2-1 -2 t 2

Question 2
(a)To get 3 set I substitute
X = t2 + 49

y=t+1 t

X = 4t2 + 49

y = 2t

X = 16t2 + 49

y = 4t

(b) Cannot. This is because (y-1)20 and always positive

for every values of y. So, x = -t2 is impossible. We can
start with any choice for the parametric equation for x as
long as x -49 is not a negative.
(c) We can start with any choice for the parametric
equation for y because x = (y-1)2 + 49

(b) Based on the graph (a), there are two points of intersection.
(c) Lets x1 = x2
Using the equation involving form a sin + b cos
t = 4.676s or 5.676s
and lets y1 = y2
Using the equation involving form a sin + b cos
t = 0.927s or 4.712s
Based on the time ( 4.676s and 4.712s ), the particles are not
colliding but they nearly collide to each other.
