Using CoreBalance Current Transformer For Earth Fault Protection

Thecorebalance currenttransformer(orCBCT)isnormallyoftheringtype,throughthecentre
ofwhichispassedcablethatformstheprimarywinding.An earthfaultrelay,connectedtothe
secondarywinding,isenergisedonlywhenthereisresidualcurrentintheprimarysystem.
TheadvantageinusingthismethodofearthfaultprotectionliesinthefactthatonlyoneCTcore
isusedinplaceofthreephaseCTswhosesecondarywindingsareresiduallyconnected.Inthis
waytheCTmagnetisingcurrentatrelayoperationisreducedbyapproximatelythreetoone,an
importantconsiderationinsensitiveearthfaultrelayswherealoweffectivesettingisrequired.The
numberofsecondaryturnsdoesnotneedtoberelatedtothe cableratedcurrentbecauseno
secondarycurrentwouldflowundernormalbalancedconditions.
Thisallowsthenumberofsecondaryturnstobechosensuchastooptimisetheeffectiveprimary
pickupcurrent.
Corebalancetransformersarenormallymountedoveracableatapointcloseuptothecable

glandofswitchgearorotherapparatus.Physicallysplitcores(slipovertypes)arenormally
availableforapplicationsinwhichthecablesarealreadymadeup,asonexistingswitchgear.
