LUBRIZOL TEST PROCEDURE

TP-TM-006C
Edition: June 27, 2013
Previous Editions: April 20, 2010 / July 9, 2010
Original Date: May 24, 2004

Determination of Saponification Value1

Apparatus and Reagents:
1. 0.7 N Alcoholic potassium hydroxide2
2. Phenolphthalein indicator3 (1.0% in
Isopropanol)
3. 1.0 N Sulfuric acid, Standardized4
4. 3 Ground neck Erlenmeyer flasks, 250 mL
5. 4 ft min air condensers or 1 ft min water
condensers
6. Hot plate
7. Pipette, volumetric, 50 mL

4. At the end of refluxing period, cool flasks to

60C and rinse condensers with ~ 10 mL D.I.
water. Remove flasks from condenser and
rinse ground glass neck with ~ 10 mL D.I.
water. To the blank flask, add ~10 mL D.I.
water.
5. Add 1 mL phenolphthalein indicator to each
flask and titrate with 1.0 N sulfuric acid to a
colorless endpoint.
CAUTION: Phenolphthalein is a carcinogen
and irritant. Handle with care. Wear safety
glasses and gloves.
CAUTION: Sulfuric acid is highly toxic and
corrosive. Wear safety glasses and gloves.

Procedure:
1. Into two 250 mL ground neck Erlenmeyer flasks,
weigh in duplicate an appropriate sample size
(see Size of Sample on page 2) of the ester to
0.1 mg accuracy. Leave the third flask empty
(without sample) and serve as the blank.
2. Pipette 50 mL alcoholic potassium hydroxide to
each flask and add ~ 10 mL D.I. water. Add
boiling stones to the two sample flasks.
CAUTION:
Potassium
Hydroxide
is
corrosive. Wear safety glasses and gloves.

Calculations:
Saponfication Value =

[mL(blank) - mL(sample)] x N(H2SO4) x 56.1

Wt of sample in gms

Ester Value = (Saponificatin Value) - (Acid Value)

% Ester Content =

(Ester Value)(MW of Ester)

10 x 56.1

3. Attach condensers to the sample flasks and

apply heat to reflux on a hot plate for 2 hours
(see Reflux Period on page 2 for specific
products). Let the blank flask stand at room
temperature.
