The Milwaukee River Revitalization Foundation was established in 1994 to improve the environmental quality of the Milwaukee River Basin. It advocates for environmental conservation, public access, and sensitive recreation in the region's river watersheds. The Foundation has promoted projects involving land acquisition, trail development, bridge redesigns, and more. Future goals include establishing a riverfront parkway for public access and education along the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers to revitalize neighborhoods and improve water quality.

CES 210: Intro. To Conservation and Environmental Science

2009: Fall Semester

Brief History of Organization
 Established in 1994 to improve the environmental quality of the
Milwaukee River Basin.

 Advocates environmental conservation, public access and

sensitive recreation in metro Milwaukee’s river watersheds.

 Achievements: promoted projects regarding Land Acquisition,

Beer Line Trail development, City bridge redesign over the North
Avenue dam, and the East Bank Trail development from Caesar's
Park to Riverside Park.

 Future Goals: establish a parkway for public access, walkways,

recreation and education, bordering the Milwaukee, Menomonee
and Kinnickinnic Rivers; to use the rivers to revitalize surrounding
neighborhoods; and to improve water quality.
Environmental Issue(s) and SL
Currently focusing on creating a natural
hibernation ground for species effected by
River West dorms and the preservation of
the River Valley and preservation of green
space in dense urban areas.

Planted trees (i.e. Red/White Oak), cut

down invasive species (i.e. Buckthorn),
cleaned along trail edges, picture mapping
north bank trail
Environmental Issue in Detail
 From started in late 1930’s when companies
and homes would throw waste in and along
river banks.
 Causing pollutants in river water

 Importance of investigating the issues allows

for Milwaukee residents to be aware of the
contamination of the river basin and
surrounding waterways into Lake Michigan
Researching the Issue

Chapter 15 was a great chapter in

helping to better understand biodiversity

Urban Ecology Center and Supervisor

Vincent

Determining the differences between

invasive and natural species
SL and Systems Thinking Map
 Falls into all three Categories
 Institutional – Need government funding to purchase land and for preservation costs
 Socioeconomic – Will increase value of surrounding neighborhoods and well as
keeping the city green and its residents more active
 Ecosystem – by introducing natural species to the environment will help in balancing
the natural ecosystem
 Helped me understand and realize all aspects that are involved in
creating such a project
 Gave them a virtual picture of the north bank of the river trail
