How to Succeed in My Class

Be Prepared on time, in your seat, with appropriate materials


Be Positive ready to learn and think for yourself
Be Attentive by participating in class, listening and staying on task
Be Responsible for your assignments and your actions
Be Respectful of yourself, your peers, and of me, your teacher.

Welcome to American Studies! This course is


designed to help students become active and informed
citizens in a democratic society. Lessons are aligned with
the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) along
with the CA History-Social Science State Standards. As
your teacher, I will do all I can to help you succeed in not
only meeting the standards, but exceeding them. I have
high expectations of my students for the purpose of
preparing you for high school and developing you into lifelong, self-sufficient learners.

Grade Breakdown

Failure to meet the standards will result in the following


consequences:
1st time: Warning
2nd time: Detention
3rd time: Detention and parent notification
4th/ 5th time: Referral to counselor/administrator

only. Expect the notebook to be
collected and graded periodically.

Absences and Make-Up Work:

Materials:

If you know you are going to be absent, I will help you prepare for what you will miss.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make-up the work.
You must make up all missed assignments within the amount of time equal to days missed.

Late Work:

All work must be turned in the day it is due (at the beginning of the period).
Late work will receive half credit, provided it is turned in before notebooks are collected.
Students will be expected to come in during their nutrition break or at lunch to finish any
missing work.
You may use the library if you do not have a computer at home to type or print. If a printer
runs out of ink, students can email their essay to themselves or use a USB drive to print it at
school in the library. Printer malfunctions do not excuse late work.
CHEATING/COPYING:

Plagiarism (noun): taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as your own. Synonyms: copying, stealing, theft

DO NOT CHEAT/COPY/PLAGIARIZE!

I will catch you and you will receive a zero on the assignment. Do your own work!

Extras.
PHONES: Phones or iPods may only be used at the direction of the teacher. There will be days that students may need their
phones, iPods, or tablets to participate. Otherwise there should be no texting, surfing the Internet, playing games on your
phone, taking pictures in class etc. If a cellphone is visible in class it will be removed. No warnings. If a students cell phone is
removed a 2nd time, it will be sent to the office for parents to retrieve.
Bathroom passes will be allowed in moderation, and never the first or last 5 minutes of class.
Be open to new ideas and opinions, especially when they stem from a classmate.
Communicate. Come to me with questions or concerns. Let me know if there is something I can do to help you. There is
power in asking.
