Playground Problems: Jessica Branstetter

The document discusses problems with the playground material at a school, including students getting injured by stray material and it staining clothes. It proposes plans to address these issues, such as creating tools for cleaning, researching protective grates for storm drains, and considering alternative materials. Students will help prototype solutions and improve existing tools through activities like "Tinker Tuesday". The project aligns with several Next Generation Science Standards.

Problems
Jessica Branstetter

The Purpose
Students are getting injured by stray tanbark
Recycled and dyed rubber is staining student shoes and clothes
The material is getting into the watershed through the storm drains

on the playground and in the parking lot.

The Plan

How might we.

Create a tool for students and sta to use to help take ownership of a

clean and safe playground.

Research and design extra netting or grates to keep rubber from going

through the drain into the watershed.

Research alternative materials and injury data.

Consider cost
Present to administration
ASUMPTION: Replacing the material will be too expensive to consider.

Involve other classes, sta, and parents in the process of keeping the

material in the designated area

Prototype
Involve students!
What already exists that we can use?
How can we improve on what already exists?
