Message From Presidente Dayton

Commitment Invitations Lead to Change and Conversion

Our missionary purpose is to invite others to come unto Christ by accepting the Restored
Gospel through faith, repentance, baptism, the reception of the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end.
For them to do so, real change has to occur in their lives. This kind of change does not come easily and
the adversary battles with us every step along the way to discourage people from having that "mighty
change of heart" spoken of in Alma. We boldly invite people to exercise faith unto repentance which
leads to baptism, confirmation and a complete change in the direction of their lives. This always
involves their making commitments to do certain things that will GROW their faith in Jesus Christ and his
Restored Church. We can always tell if they are sincerely interested in changing their lives by whether
or not they keep commitments which they make while being taught by the outstanding missionaries of
El Faro. When they do keep their commitments we know that "they truly manifest by their works that
they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins." ( D&C 20:37).
A COMMITMENT INVITATION is crucial to helping people make and keep commitments.
As stated in PMG, "People become converted as they live the principles they learn (John 7:17) and feel
the Spirit confirm that what they are doing is pleasing to their Father in Heaven. Repentance and
change will help people conquer challenges... and experience the peace and joy of God's
forgiveness. Keeping commitments prepares people to make and keep sacred covenants." A series of
commitments are required for baptism and spiritual progress after baptism. Elders and Hermanas we
must constantly be aware of the need to invite people to do things that will strengthen their faith in the
Savior. Again, Preach My Gospel reviews the fundamental principles of effective inviting:
1) Every finding opportunity should lead to an invitation to act (usually to learn more about the
Restoration).
2) We should virtually never talk to people in the course of teaching them without inviting them to do
something that will strengthen their faith in Christ.
3) Focus on one or two commitments when you teach (failure to invite or commit results in very little
progress and little growth in their faith).
4) As you prepare in companion study, decide which invitations you will extend during the next lesson
based on their needs.
5) Follow the Spirit as you teach as you may be prompted to extend invitations other than those you
planned to extend during companion study.
6) Be bold and fearless even when the investigator may look a little uncomfortable with the challenge
to change. The invitation should always be extended with deep love and humility.
7) Understand that your investigator will not change unless invited to do so.

Message From Presidente Dayton

Elders and Hermanas, I am just completing the extraordinary experience of interviewing

all 192 missionaries in El Faro. The Spirit has born witness to me that our missionaries are special
emissaries of the Savior, the vast majority of which are obedient, hard-working and desirous of being
consecrated. I have been so touched by your devotion, your love of the Savior, your unselfishness, and
your love for your investigators. I have been moved to tears by your testimonies, your dedication and
your passion for this great latter day work. I pray that we, as a mission, will be fearless and bold, fearing
no man, as we go forth to share that which is of greater value than anything on the face of the earth.
May the Lord bless you in this indescribably wonderful and joyful endeavor.
Con deseos de invitar con poder y autoridad,
Presidente Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Benevolence vs. Selfishness

Benevolence is giving to others' basic needs without having as my motive personal reward. It is
readily revealing others deeds of kindness but making sure that your own good to others is kept
concealed. It is doing the right thing for the right reason. When we choose to care for others, help
make others successful, freely give of our time and talents to bless others, and take personal interest
in others we are benevolent.
Many prophets have exemplified the character trait of benevolence. Nephi did all he could to
please the Lord, to help his family, never with the thought of personal gain--just to do whatever the
Lord asked and for the right reason. King Benjamn says in Mosiah 2:14-15, I have labored with mine
own hands that I might serve you... I do not desire to boast... Only to serve God." President Kimball is
also a prophet who was known for his benevolence.
Mac Anderson, author of Simple Truths, tells this touching story. "Dad owned a furniture store, and I
used to dust every Wednesday after school to earn my allowance. One afternoon I observed my
dad talking to all customers--the banker, a farmer, and a doctor. At the end of the day, just as Dad
was closing, the garbage collector came in. I was ready to go home but Dad greeted him at the
door with a big hug and talked with him about his wife and son who had been in a recent car
accident. He empathized, asked questions and listened. When the man finally left I asked, "Dad , why
did you spend so much time with him... he's just a garbage collector?" Dad looked at me, locked the
front door and said, "I'm your father and I tell you lots of stuff, but if you remember nothing else I ever
tell you, remember this... treat every human being just the way you want to be treated. If you had
understood that you would have never said what you said. " We sat there for another hour and
discussed the meaning and power of the Golden Rule. Dad said, if you live the Golden Rule--Do unto
others as you would have them do unto you-- everything else in life will usually work out, but if you
don't, your life will probably be very unhappy and without meaning."

Message From Hermana Dayton

We can apply Benevolence in missionary work by:

--Treating every missionary, ward member, and investigator with the same respect you would like to
receive.
--Choosing to look upon mundane missionary duties such as contacting and knocking doors as a
labor of love for the Lord and the people of Spain.
--Caring more about your companions growth and character than his or her material
achievements baptisms.
--Focusing on your investigators inner needs and desires rather than selfishly focusing on your own
success by reaching numbers.

President Dayton and I admire the many in our mission who are Benevolent. We see you going the
extra mile to serve and love the people, you invest time and energy to bless those around you
without any thought of personal recognition. Thank you for the example of goodness you are... we
are inspired by your genuine love and concern for others. We love you dearly and pray for you daily
as you valiantly serve others.

The Miracle of Baptism

Hello President! This week was

so amazing! First off I'd like to
thank you for coming to
Susannahs baptism. It meant a
lot to my companion, Susana
and I. I think we can both
agree that the spirit was
definitely present at her
baptism. In all honesty I was
super nervous and super
stressed but in the end it was
all worth it! When Susana bore
her testimony and it literally
brought tears to my eyes. I feel
so blessed to have been part
of her change and although
there were bumps in the road,
it just testified to me the grand
importance of the atonement
and how meaningful the
repentence process is! I love
this gospel so much!

Dear President, Just last night,

Elder ______and I entered a
building where somebody told
us they lived. We went up the
stairs, and started trying to hit
buttons on the wall to get
some light in on us, because
the lights were out..but
accidently rang a doorbell
while doing so. Oops-- old
woman opens up. Lookin
mighty cranky, but we go for it
anyways. We soon find out her
name is Milagro, or "Miracle" in
Spanish. Coincidence? I think
not. Haha. No, but for reals, it
was very cool. We went on
teaching the story of Joseph
smith, bearing testimony, and
yes, even showed he video
"because of Him". Classic
hehe. She's super interested-told us she's been searching for
truth all her life without luck. I
cannot wait to see her again!!
What a
miracle, right?! What a
Milagro!!!!!

Hello president!! Well we

contacted a lady like a month
ago in the street, it was pretty
good but then when we asked
for a number and address she
didn't give us a number and
just pointed up to a building
and said see that window
that's where I live pass by
whenever. To me it seemed
super flojo so I was like "ok
whatever I guess will just pass
by when we don't have
anything to do" what I said to
Elder ________So one day we
passed by and I touched the
door bell and no answer at all.
I knew that it was a bad
contact is what I was thinking
and then Elder ______said, lets
knock the other door. I wasn't
excited to do so but I said ok
well there's nothing bad that
can come from it. Well when
we did Ijuan answered the
door and had no idea who we
were but we just started telling
him who we are and what we
do. And then all of a sudden
the lady from the street comes
out from behind him and was
super happy. Well long story
short we started teaching
them and this last week we set
a baptismal date with the
entire family all 8 of them!! It's
been an awesome miracle to
see this happen...

Buenos Das Presidente!

El pensamiento despus de
tener la leccin con Alex y
Presidente Dayton. De ver
Alex en una camisa blanca y
corbata repartiendo la Santa
Cena. Me puse llorar un poco.
Puede pasar. VA A PASAR. I
wrote that down right as we

went into Relief Society

yesterday. It was a beautiful
lesson with you and I can't
thank you enough!

President Dayton,
BAPTISMMMMMM!!!!I had
the privilege to baptize our
investigator Silvia! It has
been incredible to see how
the Holy Ghost changes
people's lives if they really
strive to accept gods will
and have an open heart. I
haven't received this much
joy in my life before.
Baptizing is ultimately the
best thing I have ever done.
But also confirming is
incredible. Every time I stand
in the circle it amazes me
how much the spirit testifies
to me. The Windows of
heaven are literally opened
up and the blesses and the
gift of the Holy Ghost is
poured down. I would go as
far to say I feel as if it is not
only us in that circle but
angels are also around us.
The warmth and joy are
eternal. I love this work. I love
my mission. 2nd miracle We
met with our other
investigator David. He
explained to us that he had
the desire to be baptized!
We went through all the
things we needed to teach
him and he basically was
teaching us! He even asked
us if he could come help us
work one day. So happy for
him! He will be baptized this
Saturday! The lord is truly
blessing us here in
__________. David would be
our fecha for this Saturday.

The Miracle of Baptism

Dear President Dayton,

This week we had the
baptism of Jesus! The
program was super good and
we even had several
investigators there to see it.
He asked me to be the one to
baptize him and it was such a
sweet experience. He best
part of the whole thing was
the closing hymn, "Families
can be together forever." The
spirit was incredibly strong,
and I know that Jesus' family
is an eternal family in
progress! Besides that we've
had a super busy week. We
have another investigator
named Alejandro who wants
to get baptized this Saturday
so we've been teaching him
all the lessons. And we had to
help Jesus prepare for his
interview. It's really great
working with people who
have the goal to be
baptized. Something that I
like about Elder _______is how
focused he is. Whenever we
have to travel he always has
something to do to study the
language or prepare for our
lessons, and he is always
focused on baptism as our
biggest goal, and how we
can help our investigators
take that important step.

Dear President Dayton,

So, here is the informe about
the meeting in Teruel: In total,
we had 8 people for Teruel
that came to the meeting
and 17 people from
Castelln; for a total of 25
people. We did it in the home
of a member-family that lives
there, the Lpez family. Out
of the 8 people there, there
were 3 investigators, 2 were
brought by members and 1
was a contact that we did.
We were excited and happy
to see the start of the group in
Teruel, and glad that all those
people came to support us....
We spent Friday and
Saturday and we were able
to get into contact with
about 80% of our investigators
(of both the Elders and the
Hermanas)......But the
meeting went very well and
the investigators that did
come enjoyed the first
meeting that we had and are
excited for next week. As for
the investigators that didn't
show up, said that they would
come the next week.
As for the work in Teruel, there
is a lot of potential.
