Location Report

Sophie Laxton explores three locations for her AS Level Film Studies portfolio: 1) Courtland Avenue, a isolated street emphasizing the theme of isolation. She will use tracking shots to show the young girl's movements. 2) The hallway leading to the kitchen, where slow clicks of heels and a ticking clock will build fear through shots and eerie music. 3) The kitchen/dining area, meant to seem homely but where fear is created by making a secure place unsafe as the girl is tied to a chair, struggling to escape. She will use a range of shots, mostly close-ups, to show the girl is disoriented after being hit.

Production Planning: Location Report.

For my AS Level Film Studies portfolio, following the textual analysis of the
two films We Need To Talk About Kevin and The Roommate, I have
explored how the directors Lynne Ramsay and Christian E. Christiansen
represent fear and isolation. Both use the locations of places that are
meant to be seen as safe and secure (family home and dorm room).

Location 1: The Street:

The first location I have chosen is
Courtland Avenue in Ilford and it is
the road that my second location
is located on. I intend to use this
location as the road that the
young girl walks down to get to
her house. I will use tracking shots
in order to emphasise her
movements. This road is quite
isolated, emphasising one of the
main themes that Ive chosen;
isolation. I will use a lot of wide
shots to show the empty space
around her, making her loneliness more evident.

Location 2: The
Hallway:
The second
location I will
be using is the
hallway leading
to the kitchen.
To build up the
fear, I will use
shots of the
ticking wall
clock and the slow clicks of the girls heels on the wooden floor. These
noises along with the non-diegetic eerie music will build up the fear within
the audience, creating the atmosphere needed for a successful thriller and
horror film. I will use mostly close up shots of the clock and her shoes.

Location 3: the kitchen:

This will be my final location for my film. It is a kitchen and family dining
area, making it seem ore homely. This affects the scene as it makes a
secure place seem unsafe and harmful, creating a sense of fear. The chair
seen in the middle of the picture will be the chair that the girl is tied to.
One arm will be tied to each arm of the chair and she will struggle to
escape. I will use a range of shots in this location, as it is the location that
will be used throughout the majority of the sequence. There will mostly be
close-up shots at canted angles to show that the girl is disoriented after
being hit over the head.
