New Series

Journey to Life: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus

Starting Feb. 14, many, but not all Growth Groups will be reading
and discussing The Way:Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus by Adam
Hamilton. The same themes will be highlighted in worship.

To sign up for a group, use one of these methods:

-On the bulletin tear-off
-Online at www.moumc.org
-At the Growth Group table in the Connector Sundays through Feb. 14.

Our Gift to You

Each family unit or single person in the congregation will receive a

Lenten devotional with 40 days of reflection based on the book The
Way. This is our gift to you - a way to connect and go deeper into the
series daily. Drop by the bookstore table in the Connector. (Please
note the devotional book will replace the Growing Deeply Guide typically in the worship bulletin
during Lent).

New Seekers Class Series

On Feb. 14 the Seekers class will begin a new series.

The new study is titled: John The Gospel of Light and
Life by Adam Hamilton. This six-week class will include
a 10-15 minute video featuring Adam Hamiltons passion
for scripture and skill as a teacher. Following the video
the class will discuss the book. The Seekers welcome any
adults looking for a Sunday school class where fellow
Christians can be part of growing in our faith. Seekers
Class meets at 10am on Sunday mornings in room 302.

Sunday Office Volunteers

We are looking for persons that can cover the office on

Sunday mornings from 8:30 11 a.m. Your responsibilities
would include office monitoring, answering the phone,
assisting members as needed.
Please contact Kathy Carson at: [email protected] or
443-3111, ext. 1210.

Turning Point Volunteers

Turning Point is a program at Wilkes Methodist Church. Its

goals are to offer dignity and hope for those experiencing
homelessness. They offer showers, laundry, storage, a
mailing address, a cup of coffee and a smile to those in
need. Occasionally their clients need a ride to a doctors
appointment, court appearance, to the Greyhound bus
station in Midway, etc. If you can support this mission
please email Melissa Clarke at [email protected].

Help Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and Fishes, located at Wilkes Boulevard UMC, is a

ministry that provides a nutritious meal for the people of
our community. The impact of this ministry is far reaching,
as 100-120 meal servings are provided every night.
Missouri UMC forms teams to serve at Loaves and Fishes
the second Saturday of every month. These volunteers
help purchase, prepare and serve a warm meal, and are
encouraged to spend time getting to know the guests.
Contact Rev. Trista ([email protected]) for ways that you
can be involved!

Mission of the Month

When you visit the coffee shop in
February your tips will support the
Mission of the Month: Mozambique
Partnership.

Barnabas Ministry

Know of someone who needs a little encouragement?

Or has a joy to celebrate? The anonymous Barnabas
Ministry at Missouri UMC provides reminders that we
dont walk alone, but that God and a community of
faith walks with us as we share the joys and sorrows of
life. Please let Barnabas know of those who need a sign
of Gods presence by putting their name and contact
information into the Barnabas box outside of the church
office. Be sure to include a brief description of why they
need support at this time so that Barnabas can respond
appropriately.

PATCH Volunteers

PATCH Volunteers are needed in the Columbia area to

drive children to Chillicothe to visit there mothers. A
minimum of two adults are required to transport children.
It is a full day starting about 8am and returning around
4:30 or 5pm every 4 to 5 weeks.
PATCH (Parents and Their Children), a not-for-profit
organization, helps children and their mothers,
incarcerated at Chillicothe Correctional Center, keep
and build a better connection while they are separated
by incarceration. Working with the support of prison
administration and staff, PATCH provides parent
education to incarcerated mothers, more private
visits for children with their mothers in PATCH visiting
rooms and transportation for children who need rides.
Volunteers transport the children from their community
for PATCH visits. There are currently several children in
the Columbia/Jefferson City area who need rides. Please
consider becoming a PATCH Volunteer Driver. Visits are
coordinated with drivers by PATCH staff on dates that
work for the drivers. Visits are four hours in length and
include lunch. For more information you can contact
Terri Williams ([email protected]) for more
information or for an application to be a volunteer.

SATURDAY: Matthew 6:16-21 Fasting

We will begin the Lenten journey soon. Instructions for fasting are also
delineated in Matthew 6. Even now, begin asking God to speak to your heart in
your time of prayer- about what to lay down and what to pick up- during the 40
day season of self-examination and remembering the life of Christ.

FRIDAY: Ephesians 4:4-6 One Ascetic example: St. Francis of Assisis

meditation prayer
St. Francis prayed: My God and my All!

THURSDAY: Matthew 6:1-18 Speak, Lord

Rev. Kendall shared that in those times of silence and solitude we may
pray speak Lord. Listen to these two contemporary songs about God
speaking: Word of God Speak by Mercy Me (https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=BYu8ZyETnKo&list=RDBYu8ZyETnKo) and Donnie McClurkins Speak to
My Heart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qK5b_kokJE).

WEDNESDAY: Matthew 6:5-8 Focused prayer

How do you focus your prayer? This looks different for everyone. Do you have
an altar at home that helps you center? Maybe you have a chair you sit in. Or a
posture you take on; kneeling, prostrate, lifted or bowed head? Consider how
you focus or how you might begin to focus.

TUESDAY: Matthew 6:5-8 Prayer shawl

The closet mentioned in Matthew is not a physical place we imagine today. The
prayer closet from here would translate as tent; the tent created from the
tallitprayer shawlplaced on ones head, signifying a focus, a straight ahead
(not distracted side to side) gaze and dialog with God. (From conversation with
Rev. Kim Parker)

MONDAY: Matthew 6:5-8 Show offs

This scripture calls out the pharisee show offs who sought to impress others
with their long and wordy prayers. Even in prayer the ascetic is simple, plain
speaking.

Any score over 15 indicates a preference for this spiritual temperament.

___ Total

___ I would really enjoy spending time on a night watch, taking a short vow of
silence, simplifying my life.

___ I would enjoy reading the book A Place Apart: Monastic Prayer and Practice
for Everyone.

___ Taking an overnight retreat by myself at a monastery where I could spend

large amounts of time alone in a small room, praying to God and studying His
Word, and fasting for one or more days are all activities I would enjoy.

___ The words silence, solitude, and discipline are very appealing to me.

___ I would describe my faith as more internal than external.

___ I feel closest to God when Im alone and there is nothing to distract me
from focusing on His presence.

Are you an ascetic? Take the brief assessment below to see if this temperament
is a dominant one for you. Rate each statement 1-5, with 1 being not true and
5 very true. Taken from Sacred Pathways: Discover Your Souls Path to God by
Gary Thomas.

Ascetics want nothing more than to be left alone in prayer. They live a
fundamentally internal existence. Even when they are part of a group of
people, they might seem to be isolated from the othersuncomfortable in an
environment that keeps them from listening to the quiet. [25]
