Galaxies and Cosmology - HW 4

This document provides 5 problems for an astrophysics assignment. The first problem asks to plot the number density of particles over time and redshift for matter- and radiation-dominated universes. The second through fourth problems refer to sections in a textbook. The fifth problem revisits a previous homework question about the rate at which stars would need to produce light for the photon energy density of the universe to remain constant given current cosmological parameters.

AST3402 Assignment 4

1. Express and plot the number density of conserved particles in the universe as a
function first of time, and second of redshift for both a matter-dominated universe and a
radiation-dominated universe. (They will also be functions of the current number
density.)
2. Ryden 5.2
3. Ryden 5.3
4. Ryden 5.4
5. Re-do Problem 5 from the last HW, given what you know now.
At what rate would stars have to be producing light (how many typical photons per
second per solar mass star) in order for the energy density of photons in the universe
to be constant. Assume current values of cosmological parameters. Do it for the
current time.
