Mole

A chemist uses moles and stoichiometry to convert between grams and moles of substances. A mole is a unit that represents 6.022x10^23 particles and allows for convenient stoichiometric calculations. The mole was discovered by Italian scientist Amedeo Avogadro in 1811, when he realized that equal volumes of gases contain equal numbers of molecules at the same temperature and pressure.

WHO DISCOVERED THE

MOLE?
Lorenzo Romano Amadeo Carlo
Avogadro discovered the mole.
Avogadro was an early nineteenth
century Italian scientist who is
credited with being the first to
realize the connection between the
volume of a gas and the number of
atoms or molecules. He was not a
very prominent scientist, so his
works created little interest in the
scientific community. Avogadros
hypothesis was based off of the
research of Joseph Gay-Lussac.
Avogadros Law states, At a fixed
temperature and pressure, equal
volumes of gases contain the same
number of molecules. At the time
of Avogadros death the amount of
particles there were in a mole was
not determined yet. Robert Brown
was the first scientist to give an
approximate
value.
In
1958,

A mole is the number of atoms

of carbon-12 that are found in a
12 gram sample (i.e., 6.023 X
1023). A mole is just a unit of
measurement created to refer
to a large number of things
easily.

WHAT IS THE NUMERIC

VALUE OF A MOLE?
The mole is approximately
equal to 6.022169 x 10 23.

HOW DO YHOU FIND THE

WEIGHT OF A MOLE?
To find the weight of a mole,
you must multiple by the
molar mass of the substance.
