F1. GENERAL STATEMENT.
.Whether or not any form of ministry is to be undertaken, clergy are recommended to apply for a ‘Permission to Officiate’ from the Bishop. In this way a relationship is continued with the Bishop and the diocese. When the Bishop issues the ‘Permission to Officiate’ it is usually presented formally by the Rural Dean of the deanery to which the minister has decided to retire. For the diocesan policy statement see Appendix 16.
F2. THE RETIRED CLERGY ASSOCIATION
has an active branch in the diocese. Further details are available from the Bishop’s office at Bishopsgrove.
F3. THE WINCHESTER AND PORTSMOUTH DIOCESAN
CLERICAL REGISTRY. See Section C21 for further details.
F4. PASTORAL CARE.
The pastoral care of the retired clergy living in the diocese is the responsibility of the Archdeacon and the Rural Dean, acting on behalf of the Bishop. All cases of illness should be advised to one of them. In addition, where a death occurs the Archdeacon (or in the Archdeacon’s absence the Rural Dean) should be informed immediately. In some cases the diocese is able to offer a grant to a pensioner’s widow/widower to help defray immediate expenses following a bereavement. The clergy charities also make grants to assist at a time of bereavement see Section G).
F5. RETIREMENT HOUSING.
For details of housing available to clergy in retirement consult the Archdeacon, or the Church of England Pensions Board, 29 Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3PS (see Section C10). The provision includes properties for rental and an Equity Sharing Loan Mortgage scheme funded by the Church Commissioners. F6. RETIREMENT ADVISERS. The diocese has appointed its archdeacons to give informal and confidential advice to those preparing for retirement. (See Section C10.5.)
F7. WIDOWS’ OFFICERS.
With the assistance of other clergy the Archdeacons are also the Widows’ Officers in the diocese.
