This document contains 10 math problems from the 6th Indian National Mathematical Olympiad from 1991. The problems cover a range of topics including: finding the number of integers where a quadratic expression is a multiple of 6; proving geometric relationships involving areas of triangles formed by points on semicircles; solving a system of equations involving trigonometric, exponential and algebraic expressions; proving objects of various weights can be balanced in two groups; and determining the set of positive integers where a function counting ordered pairs of fractions equals 5.

1. Find the number of positive integers n for which (i) n 1991 and (ii) 6 is a factor of
n2 + 3n + 2.
2. Given any acute-angled triangle ABC, let points A0 , B 0 , C 0 be located as follows: A0
is the point where altitude from A on BC meets the outwards-facing semicircle drawn
on BC as diameter. Points B 0 and C 0 are located similarly. Prove that:
[BCA0 ]2 + [CAB 0 ]2 + [ABC 0 ]2 = [ABC]2 ,
where [ABC] denotes the area of triangle ABC, etc.
3. Given a triangle ABC, define the quantities x, y, z as follows:

x = tan BC
tan A2 ;
2

B
y = tan CA
tan
;
2
AB

C2
z = tan 2
tan 2 .
Prove that x + y + z + xyz = 0.
4. Let a, b, c be real numbers with 0 < a < 1, 0 < b < 1, 0 < c < 1 and a + b + c = 2.
Prove that

5. Triangle ABC has incentre I. Let points X, Y be located on the line segment AB, AC
respectively, so that BXAB = IB 2 and CY AC = IC 2 . Given that the points X, I, Y
lie on a straight line, find the possible values of the measure of angle A.

6. (a) Determine the set of all positive integers n for which 3n+1 divides 23 + 1.
n

(b) Prove that 3n+2 does not divide 23 + 1 for any positive integer n.
7. Solve the following system of equations for real x, y, z:
x + y z = 4,

x2 y 2 + z 2 = 4,

xyz = 6.

8. There are ten objects of total weight 20, each of the weights being a positive integer.
Given that none of the weights exceed 10, prove that the ten objects can be divided
into two groups that balance each other when placed on the two pans of a balance.

9. Triangle ABC has incentre I; its incircle touches the side BC at T . The line through
T parallel to IA meets the incircle again at S and the tangent to the incircle at S
meets AB, AC at points C 0 , B 0 respectively. Prove that triangle AB 0 C 0 is similar to
triangle ABC.
10. For any positive integer n, let s(n) denote the number of ordered pairs (x, y) of positive
1 1

integers for which + = . (For instance, s(2) = 3.) Determine the set of positive
x y
n
integers for which s(n) = 5.
