Pointe R: Glass Tube Water

When ice-cold water is poured on the flask, the level of water in the glass tube drops. This is because the cold flask causes the air inside to contract, reducing its pressure and allowing external air to enter the flask through the water in the glass tube. Then, as the flask warms, the air inside expands, increasing pressure and causing the water level in the glass tube to rise. In the thermometer, when temperature rises, the metal rod expands more than the fixed end, causing the pointer to move in the direction shown.
