ALE Reflection
WITHIN THE DISCIPLINE:
This position has given me many opportunities to improve myself, and
others. One thing that Ive learned as a Residential Leader, is that progress in
my academic life leads to progress in the real world. The more I work to
study, and to help others study as an RL, the more knowledge I gain into how
I can carry that over into the real world. Also, this contribution to others
academically can carry over to helping the residents in their everyday life
choices. If I can influence them to do the morally right decision, that
experience will carry over into their everyday lives. Lastly, if I can lead by
example, the students will learn to follow my lead, as an important figure to
them. All of these together make the resident, as well as myself, grow as a
leader.
BEYOND THE DISCIPLINE:
A course that helped me develop my interpersonal skills was my speech
class. The class got me to open up to my peers, and made me able to speak
to them on a group level. This boosted my confidence in myself, and inspired
me to great in everything I do, be it group studying skills, or a job interview.
Being an executive member of the Residence Hall Association has also
developed me as a person. The organization is about providing for the on
campus community, and helping them with their facility needs. We also
provide fun activities for the residents to come hang out and relax after a
stressful day in classes. In doing so, we develop our skills in helping others,
as well as real-world planning and design. Lastly, my experience in martial
arts has tremendously developed my discipline. Because of my time
participating in the arts, I have a sense of discipline and responsibility that
carries over into every aspect of my life. I believe these things have all had a
part in making me the leader that I am today.
BEYOND ACADEMICS:
Something that has helped me outside the classroom would be my faculty
walk and talks. I have had two this year, and they really give you (and the
residents) and inside look of who the professor really is. Not only do you get
to learn about them, but you get to learn about ways to study, good and bad
habits, as well as an insight into your future field of work. Having both Dr.
Mollick and Dr. Agapie expanded my knowledge of life after college, and
encouraged me to do my best while I am here at Tarleton State University. I
am also a head of the funding appeals committee for the SGA House of
Representatives. In the position, I, along with a few others, discuss the
reason for absence of certain SGA members. Based on our discussion, we

decide whether or not they are still available for funding. This experience has
given me another great opportunity to work as a group to make a fairly big
decision, which carries over into many different aspects of real-world
application.
INTERCONNECTEDNESS:
My experience as a Residential Leader has made me see the bigger picture
here at TSU. Students are not only getting an education while they are here.
They are developing life skills. They learn how to socialize, how to interview,
how to work in a group setting, and many more skills that they sometimes
dont even realize. In college, and especially at Tarleton State University,
there is a sense of family. Here you will make life long connections that will
serve you after you leave this school. There is a dramatic change of who I
was when I entered this school as a freshman to now. This development will
continue to grow and make me a better leader, and a better character.
GLOBAL AWARENESS:
Before I had the great opportunity to become a Residential Leader, I was
definitely more close-minded. I never had hatred towards any group of
people, but there were always some thoughts that were drilled into my head
as a child that excluded some people in the normal way of life. This position
has made me draw a line between what I actually believe, and what has
been told to me. I have had more friends than I ever could have imagined,
and that is only because I opened my mind and didnt make predetermined
assumptions about someone that I didnt even know.
BROADER IMPLICATIONS:
There are lots of issues that I, as well as future Residential Leaders will
experience. One of the most important things to have is an open mind.
Without it, you are unable to grow as a person or a leader. You will
undoubtedly have to work with others that have different notions and ideas
than you. Let me be clearthis does not mean that they are wrong.
Everyone was raised in a different household and all have their own opinions
and cultures. In fact, if you take the time to get to know someone that you
previously looked down on or ignored, they may even become one of your
best friends, or your future boss. Always treat others with respect, no matter
their views on life.
