Che 471 Quiz No 8 Fall 2008 Closed Book and Closed Notes, No Crib Sheet
This document contains instructions for a closed book quiz on an exothermic irreversible reaction conducted adiabatically in a plug flow reactor. It asks the student to: 1) Sketch the temperature profile, identify the maximum temperature rise, and explain how to calculate it. 2) Express the exit temperature in terms of the feed temperature, maximum rise, and conversion. 3) Show on the graph how to locate the critical space time and temperature that should not be exceeded for safe reactor design.

An n-th order (n is positive) exothermic reaction (irreversible for all practical purposes) A = P is conducted adiabatically in a tubular reactor that can be considered to be in plug flow (PFR). 1. Sketch the shape of the temperature profile along this reactor. Plot temperature at the ordinate and reactor length divided by plug flow velocity (thus space time, ) on the abscissa. Discuss the general features of this temperature versus plot. Outline what is the maximum adiabatic temperature rise Tmax and explain how to calculate it in terms of the pertinent properties of your reaction system. 2. Tell us what is the final exit reactor temperature Tf in terms of the feed temperature T0, the maximum adiabatic temperature rise Tmax and conversion achieved in the reactor, xA. 3. Conservative approach to safe design suggests that we keep the conversion in an adiabatic PFR below a certain critical value. Since temperature and conversion are related by the adiabatic line, show on your graph how to locate the critical and corresponding temperature that should not be exceeded for safe design.
