Explain

State the Procedure

Today we will learn about our afternoon dismissal routine.

Generate Rational
Establishing a dismissal routine is beneficial in several
aspects of the classroom environment. First, it creates order
and fluidity in the classroom. An orderly dismissal routine
will make entering the classroom safer and will make the
most of the students time in the classroom. A clear and
concise dismissal routine will review major points of the
days lessons, prepare the students for the next days lesson,
remind students of any homework that is due and what
activities or projects maybe coming up.

Explain and Model the Procedure

1. The teacher will signal to students that it is time to
prepare for dismissal
2. The student will clean up work area
3. The students will go to the designated whole class
meeting area
4. The teacher will begin reviewing the days lesson,
remind students of homework that is due or projects
that are coming up
5. In groups of 5, the students will first pick up their
homework folder and check to make sure they have all
the assignments
6. The first group of 5 students will pick up their
backpacks, lunch box, and coat and place them in their
backpack while the next group of 5 go to the
homework station
7. When the students finish collecting all of their
belongings they will meet back in the designated
meeting area
8. As time allows, the teacher will continue to remind,
review, and conduct closing activities as time allows

Check for understanding

1. How will you know when it is time to prepare for
dismissal?
2. What is the first thing you do?
3. Where does each group of 5 go first?
4. What do you do when you get your homework folder?
5. What do you do after you put all your personal
belongings in your backpack?

Rehearse
Practice the Procedure
The teacher will put students into assigned groups of 5. The
teacher will signal to the class that it is time for dismissal.
The students will first clean up their work area and come to
the designated meeting area. The first group of 5 will go to
the homework station. When the homework station is clear
the second group will go to the homework station. All of
the students will model the entire procedure while the
teacher helps them move through the process.
