Rain Forest Project Information

Your child has selected the rain forest animal

________________________ on which to do their research project. This
project will be an exciting way to learn about the rain forest and how to find
interesting information. During the next few weeks s/he will search at least
3 sources (at least 1 must be a book), prepare a project to share with the
class, and make a presentation to the class about the animal. In May, we will
have our Rain Forest Exhibit when we present our projects in the White
Center lobby for our family, friends, and the rest of the elementary.
Enclosed is a study guide to help you on this adventure

Tuesday, April 5 Conference with your teacher to discuss progress on

researching information about your animal. Bring
your journal. Hows it going? Any questions?

Wednesday, April 20 Final check before due date. Bring your journal.
More progress should be done than on the last
check-up! Study Guide & Bibliography cards due (at
least 3 sources).

Monday, May 2 Project, journal, & presentation due. Begin

Finding Your Information

Where to Look:
Books
Internet
Encyclopedias
Pet Shops
Magazines
Veterinarians Offices
Zoos
Interviews

Bibliography Cards

It is important to know which resources you used in your study. Make

out a bibliography card for each source you used. This way you will have a
record of the sources, in case your teacher or another student wants to
read more about your topic. You must use at least 1 book as a source.
Your bibliography cards (index cards) should be in your own writing & have:
Title of book, encyclopedia, internet source

(include title of article), etc.

Keep a Journal

You will be expected to keep a journal to record all of your work on your rain
forest project. You (not a parent) will need to record dates & times of any
work on the project, i.e. going to the library, reading books/articles, looking
for pictures on-line, making your project. This journal will be included in your
final grade and should be completed by the student. You may record this
information in any form you wish, as long as you include: dates, times/# of
minutes, & what you worked on.

Example:

why you would like an interview with him.

2. Schedule the interview at a time that is convenient for him.

3. Make a list of questions that you wish to ask.

4. Take paper and pencil to the interview so you can write answers or take

Making My Presentation
Think of your presentation as having three parts.

Part 1 Telling About Your Animal

First you will want to tell the class a little about the animal you studied. You should
use the information from your study guide and write down what you want to say in
outline form on INDEX CARDS. Do not read the whole study guide to the class. You
should know your animal well enough to share the facts youve learned without just
reading them off your paper. You may want to tell about how the animal looks, especially
if the class is not familiar with the animal. If you learned some interesting or unusual
facts about the animal, you might tell these to the class. Some animals have interesting
ways of protecting themselves. Others have unusual eating habits. You may also wish to
show several pictures in a book or encyclopedia.

Part 2 Sharing Your Project

The next part of your presentation will be an explanation of your project. Tell the
class which project you chose and why. Explain what information the project tells. You
may also want to explain how you made it.

Part 3 Question and Answer Time

When you have finished telling about your animal and your project, ask the class if
anyone has questions. If you do not know the answer to the question, you can simply say
you dont know and possibly suggest a book, or one of your sources where they might find
the information.

Choosing a Project

A project is a way you choose to display your animal and information

about your animal. There are many kinds of projects.
Before you choose a project, you need to ask yourself what information
you want to highlight. What do you want your project to show? The project
you choose will depend upon what it is about your animal that you wish to
share with your class. Here are some projects from which you may choose:
poster

photographs

sculpture

picture (regular or 3D)

illustrated story

mobile

video

project cube

puppet show

chart

booklet

collage

diorama

puppet

model

PowerPoint presentation

labeled diagram

If you choose to do a PowerPoint presentation,

turn it in on a thumb drive & print out each
slide on a separate page, in color.

What other kinds of information might you wish to share about your
animal? What project could you use to do this?
