Plumbing Installation 25

Kitchen sink drains are made of inexpensive and easy to install PVC plastic pipes and fittings. They can be purchased individually for better quality or in kits that include parts to plumb two sinks into a shared trap. Proper tools and materials are required to replace a kitchen drain, including a flat screwdriver, spud wrench, trap arm, mineral spirits, strainer kit, plumber's putty, Teflon tape, and washers. A diagram labels the key components of a kitchen sink drain system.

Kitchen Drains & Traps

itchen sink drains dont last forever, but on the

plus side, theyre very easy and inexpensive to
replace. The most common models today are made
of PVC plastic pipe and fittings held together with
slip fittings. In addition to making the installation
fairly forgiving, the slip fitting makes the drain easy to
disassemble if you get a clog. The project shown here
is a bit unusual by todays standards, in that it does
not include either a dishwasher drain or a garbage
disposer. But you will see how to add each of these
drain systems to your kitchen sink in the following
two chapters.
You can buy the parts for the kitchen drain
individually (you can usually get better quality
materials this way) or in a kit (see photo, next page).
Because most kitchen sinks have two bowls, the kits
include parts for plumbing both drains into a shared

trap, often with a baffle in the T-fitting where the

outlet line joins with the tailpiece from the other bowl.
If you are installing a disposer, consider installing
individual traps to eliminate the baffle, which reduces
the flow capacity by half (see page 34).
