How A Bell Works:: Switch and The Electromagnet Switches Off Because Springs Back and The Make-And-Break Switch

A bell works by using electricity to create an electromagnet that pulls an armature, opening and closing a switch to repeat the cycle. A relay also uses an electromagnet to pull an armature, but the armature in a relay closes a switch gap, allowing a small current to switch on a larger current, such as activating a car's starter motor. Both bells and relays utilize electromagnets and armatures to open and close switches in repeating cycles.

How a bell works:

When the bell is connected to a battery, electricity

flows through the coil and makes the iron core into a
magnet. The iron armature is pulled on to the
electromagnet. This opens the make-and-break
switch and the electromagnet switches off because
the electricity stops flowing through the coil. When
the electromagnet switches off, the armature
springs back and the make-and-break switch
closes again so the whole cycle repeats itself.

How a relay works:

Relays are used in control circuits to switch
machines on or off. The diagram shows the
construction of a relay. When the low voltage
switch is closed electricity flows through the coil.
This makes the iron core into a magnet. The iron
armature is pulled on to the electromagnet. The
armature turns about the pivot and closes the switch
gap.
In this way, a small current can be used to switch
on a much greater current. For example, when the
ignition switch of a car is operated, a current of a
few amperes passes through a relay coil and the
relay switch closes. This lets a much greater and
more dangerous current pass through the starter
motor.

work.
