Amygdalin: Reported By: Jaironn Navarro

Amygdalin is a cyanogenic glycoside found in apricot kernels, peach seeds, and plum seeds. It was first isolated in 1837 and was later promoted as an alternative cancer treatment under the name Laetrile in the 1950s, though its use was banned in the US and UK in 1978 due to lack of evidence of effectiveness and risks of cyanide poisoning. Amygdalin breaks down into hydrogen cyanide, benzaldehyde, and glucose when exposed to enzymes in the body, and ingesting bitter almonds or apricot kernels can cause cyanide poisoning and potentially death if consumed in large enough quantities.

Almonds

Seeds of apricot, peach

and plum

each raw bitter almond will produce about 4-9 mg

of hydrogen cyanide. So a few handfuls of raw
bitter almonds are enough to kill you quite swiftly
and lesser amounts may cause you other serious
health issues such as kidney failure.
With bitter almonds, 8 - 32 almonds will give you
the lethal dosage of cyanide. Bitter almonds yield
about 6.2 mg of cyanide per almond and the
LD50(median lethal dose) for cyanide is 50 mg 200 mg.

symptoms include

nausea and vomiting

headache
dizziness
cherry red skin color
liver damage
abnormally low blood pressure
