Box and whisker plots can represent a wide range of data in a concise visual format. The box outlines the middle 50% of the data values, while the whiskers extend to the highest and lowest values. For a class of 26 students aged 17 to 47, the box and whisker plot depicts the median age of 28, with quartiles below 27 and above 29 to outline where half of the students' ages fall.

Box and Whisker Plot
Upper Extreme
A college algebra class has 26
students. The ages of the students range from 17 to 47 years old. Box and whisker plots are useful in representing a wide range of data. The box outlines the area where most of the data values lie, while the whiskers extending from the box show us the values that lie outside of the norm. For our example, the ages of each of the 26 students Upper are: 17, 17, 18, Quartile 19, 21, 22, 22, 23, Medi 24, 27, 27, 27, 28, an 28, 29, 30, 31, 33, 34, 34, 35, 38, 41, 44, 45, 47
Depicted in the box and whisker plot are:
Upper Quartile Lower (the middle of the upper half of our listed ages) Quartile Lower Quartile (the middle of the lower half of our listed ages) Lower Extreme
Median (when the list of ages is
put into numerical order, the median is the middle number) 28
Upper Extreme (the highest value
from our list of ages) 47 Lower Extreme (the lowest value from our list of ages) 17
