Propeller Hull Clearances

The document provides guidelines for minimum clearances between propellers and hull structures for special service craft. It recommends minimum distances between the propeller and sternframe, rudder, or hull to reduce propeller-excited vibration. The guidelines include tables with recommended clearance values for single and twin screw configurations based on factors like number of propeller blades, propeller diameter, ship length and power. Local hull characteristics, water flow, and cavitation effects should also be considered when determining appropriate clearances.

Propeller hull clearances

3.15.1
Recommended minimum clearances between
the propeller and the sternframe, rudder or hull are given in
Table 3.3.2. These are the minimum distances considered
desirable in order to expect reasonable levels of propeller
excited vibration. Attention is drawn to the importance of the
local hull form characteristics, shaft power, water flow characteristics into the propeller disc and cavitation when
considering the recommended clearances.
