In order to become a good reader, your child should be:


Reading uninterrupted every night for at least 20 minutes.
Fluency + Comprehension = Reading
Retell the details, events, characters, setting, problem, and solution of a story.
Show they have been reading every night for 20 minutes. Please fill out the Reading is Cool
reading log and turn in every two weeks. Raz-Kids counts towards reading log. Must be at least 8
reading entries on the log.
v The spelling lists for both weeks are included in the packet. Based on the in-class spelling pre-test,
your child will be assigned the Weekly List or Challenge List. If they miss three (3) or less words, they
get the Challenge List for homework. If they miss more than four (4) or more, they get the Weekly
List for homework.
v For more practice use Raz-Kids, iReady, Sum Dog, Khan Academy, and ST Math. Spend at LEAST
20 minutes on a program.
v Please note that some homework tasks require you to complete them on a separate sheet of
paper. STAPLE ALL assignments TOGETHER including spelling and writing for 2 weeks OR complete
spelling and writing in a homework notebook. Homework not turned in will be considered
incomplete.
