Ordaz 1

Joseph Ordaz
Summary: Harmless, Very Harmless
In the novel, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, we are introduced
to Arthur Dent the last human being to survive the end of Earth destroyed by huge yellow
machines. Before this, Arthur is doing his everyday routine but, this Thursday morning marks a
new challenge for him. He is trying to save his house from being knocked down. In his favor, he
is encountered by one of his closest friends from the planet Betelgeuse, Ford Perfect. Ford, a
researcher for the book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, comes to inform Arthur that Earth
will be destroyed, but does not tell him this until they are at the bar ordering six pints of bitter.
Ford is preparing not only Arthur but, also the Barmen bluntly telling him the world is going to
end as well. Fords device detects several dozen yellow objects in the sky but, it is too late the
yellow things have control over all the media and are broadcasting their demolition on Earth.
Luckily for Ford and Author they were able to hitch a lift from the cooks on the Vogon
Constructor Fleet. While on the ship Ford hands Arthur a book The Hitchhikers Guide to the
Galaxy to clear the confusion Arthur has about the Galaxy. Arthur reads in the book that Earth is
only described by one word harmless this is significant because Arthur being one of the last
humans panics every time something goes wrong describing why Earth is harmless. Arthur is
still trying to conclude that Earth is gone, forever. He eventually passes out when he realizes
there will no longer be a McDonalds hamburger, which is hysterical because a hamburger is
very irrelevant to a whole planet being destroyed but, to Arthur he faints to the thought.
The captain of the ship, Vogon Jeltz, finds out that he has two hitchhikers on board uninvited.
Vogons are ugly, bad tempered, and bureaucratic green aliens from the seas of Vogsphere with
such horrific poetry no one in the universe can stand listening to. The captain sends his guards to

find the two hitchhikers; panicking, Author does not know what he is in for. Once they are
captured by the Vogon Jeltz, they are forced to either listen to Vogon Poetry or get thrown off the
fleet into outer space. Ford hated the poetry so much it physically hurt him, opposite to Author
while he is enjoying the poem being read. It does not take long for Vogon Jeltz to break his
promise and decide to throw both of the hitchhikers off the ship. Ford tries to come up with a
quick solution to escape death by trying to persuade the guard to not throw them both into outer
space but, fails to do so.
Somehow within their thirty seconds into outer space they are miraculously rescued by a
mysterious ship. Once on the ship, a voice tell them they are on the Heart of Gold powered by
the infinite improbability drive, meaning this ship can travel vast interstellar distances in
seconds. This ship was stolen by Zaphod Beeblebrox, Galactic president accompanied by Trillian
an intelligent girl Zaphod picked up from Earth. Trillian seems to know how to control the Heart
of Gold better than Zaphod. Zaphod sends Marvin the depressed space robot to bring up the
unknown hitchhikers they saved to him.
While Marvin, Ford, and Arthur are on their way up; Marvin informs them that Zaphod
is the captain of the stolen ship. Ford is not functional for a second as he is in shock that the
robot mentioned Zaphod Beeblebrox. As they come up to the bridge it is no coincidence they
somehow have met each other before; in all of the galaxy they have been brought together by
physics. Arthur remembers meeting Phil (Zaphod) at a party on Earth because he stole Tricia
McMillian (Trillian) away from him as he was trying to get at her all evening. And Ford is
supposedly Zaphods semi cousin which he stutters to say. Despite all that is going on, Arthur
still manages to fall asleep at night, as he would on Earth following his same routine.

After this mind blowing occurrence, Zaphod is on a mission to find the planet
Maragrathea; this is a mythical planet today no one knows exists, Zaphod want to find this planet
for the riches They spot the planet with the help of the space computer, but as they are getting
closer a recording is threating to blow their ship up with a missile if they do not leave. Everyone
is freaking out except for Zaphod who believes it is a recorded message millions of years ago.
They soon realize there are actual missiles coming to destroy the ship. Again, Ford and Arthur
have to escape death, they all come to conclusion that they have to manually guide the ship
because the computer cannot help them from this missile. Ford again takes action and tries to
save all their lives once more by leaping onto the controls. Miraculously, Ford escapes the deadly
missiles. Now they continue on their journey to planet Maragrathea.
