Questions

This document contains 10 questions related to particulate control technologies like electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) and cyclones. The questions calculate particle collection efficiencies, drift velocities, particulate emission rates, and ground level pollutant concentrations from stacks under different atmospheric conditions. They also involve sizing ESPs and cyclones based on desired collection efficiencies and gas flow rates.

Ques 1 Calculate the drift velocity for a 1 micrometre particle having a dielectric constant

equal to 6 which has reached the equilibrium charge in an ESp at a place where the electric
field strength is 300 kV/m.
Ques 2 An ESP unit consists of two identical sections in parallel each handling one half of
the gas flow. We now hold the total gas flow constant but maldistribute the flow so that 2/3rd
of the flow passes through one half of the section and 1/3rd to the other. What is the overall
collection efficiency?
Ques 3 An ESP with plate area of 6000 m2 is 97 % efficient in treating a gas flow of 200
m3/s from a thermal power plant of 200 MW capacity. How large the plate area will become
to increase the collection efficiency to 98 % and 99 % respectively.
Ques 4 An ESP is to be considered to remove fly ash from stack gas of a thermal power plant
flowing at a rate 10 m3/s. Analysis of a similar system showed that the drift velocity is
0.15m/s. Determine the plate area required to collect 0.5 micrometre particles with 90 %
efficiency, 99 % & 99.9% efficiency.
Ques 5 A fabric filter is to be considered using bags that are 0.3m in dia& 6m in length. The
bag house is to receive 10m3/s of dust loaded gas and an appropriate filtering velocity has
been determined to be 2m/min. Determine the number of bags required for a continuous and
clean operation of bag house.
Ques 6 A power plant burns 1000 tons of coal per day, 2% of which is sulfur, and all of that
is emitted from a 100-m tall stack. For a wind speed of 10 m/s, calculate a) the maximum
ground level concentration of SO2, 10 km downwind from the plant, b) the maximum ground
level concentration and the point at which this occurs for stability categories A, C, and F.
(Part b should be done with a computer).
Ques 7 A power plant emits 300 kg/hr of SO2 into a neutral atmosphere with a wind speed of
2 m/s. The y and z values are assumed to be 100 m and 30 m, respectively.
a) What will be the ground level concentration of SO2, expressed in micrograms per
cubic meter, if town is 2 km off the plume centerline and the plant has a stack that
produces an effective stack height of 20 m?
b) What will be the ground level concentration if the power plant stalls a 150-m tall
stack?
Ques 8 A coal fired power plant burns 1000 metric tons of coal per day. The coal
being burnt has 2% sulfur. What is the SO 2 emission rate? What is the SO 2
concentration at a distance of 1.0 km downwind (x = 1000 m), 0.1 km of
centerline in y-direction (y = 100m), and at ground level (z = 0) if the wind speed
is 4 m/s and it is a cloudy day? Efective stack height is 100m. Ignore reflection.
What is the ground level concentration if the reflection of the ground is included?

If the source is at the ground level (H=0), and it is necessary to measure the
concentration at ground level (z = 0), what is the concentration? Include
reflection.

Ques 9 What is the particulate removal efficiency of a cyclone if it has to remove particulates
of diameter: 100 microns, 10 microns, 1 microns, and 0.1 microns?
Ques 10 A fertilizer manufacturer emits HF at a rate of 0.9 kg/s from a stack with an effective
height of 200m, the average wind speed is 4.4m/s, and the stability category is B. What is the
concentration of HF, in g/m3, at ground level, on plume centerline, at 0.5 km from the stack?
Calculate also the ground level concentrations at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 km from
stack. Plot the results as concentration versus distance.
A cyclone separator has an inlet width of 0.25 ft and Vc = 60 ftls.
(a) Estimate the cut diameter for this cyclone separator.
(b) Estimate the collection efficiency of this cyclone separator for particles with diameter
1 IL
A particle stream has 33 weight percent particles with diameter 1 ~. 33 percent with diameter
5 ~. and 34 percent with diameter 10 ~- We now pass this stream through a cyclone whose
efficiency is described by Eq. (9.21), with Dcut = 5 ~ - What fraction by weight of the
particles will the cyclone collect?
An ESP is treating a particle-laden air stream, collecting 95 percent of the particles. We
now double the air flow rate, keeping the particle loading constant. What is the new percent
recovery? Assume Eq. (9.30) is applicable.
Supercolossal Enterprises's ESP is recovering 95 percent of the particles. The new pollution
laws require them to recover 99 percent of the particles. Their present precipitator consists
of 10 standard, factory-built units, each with area A.
How many more, just like these 10, must they add to meet the new specification? Assume
Eq. (9.30) is correct.
(b) Should they add the new units in parallel or in series?
The Geneva (Utah) Steel Works of US Steel Company in 1976 upgraded their ESPs by
changing the electric power supply to raise the operating voltage. Assume that the original
efficiency was 95 percent and the original voltage was 40 kV. If they increased the voltage
to 50 kV and held everything else constant, what is the estimated new collection efficiency?
